igor gurovich is a graphic designer and co-founder of studios ostengruppe and arbeitskollektiv. the beginning of his professional career coincided with a period of profound transformation in the post-soviet context, and at a young age he became a cult figure in russian graphic design. this status was shaped largely through his collaboration with the dom centre of contemporary culture, as well as through bold experimental projects produced by the ostengruppe bureau.
poster design is instrumental to gurovich’s practice. some of his poster series, created for a select group of clients, span multiple years and even decades, allowing the gradual evolution of his visual language to be traced over time. in these works, his interests in theatre, music, typography, and the material world converge, alongside its distinctive and often playful artifacts.

nowadays, western politicians make xenophobic statements in order to gain popularity and act like angry warlords protecting their territories — but their constituents voted for them to amend domestic policies, not to start wars. even though we’ve reached the 21st century, we still seem incapable of breaking the vicious cycle of violence, terror, and war. we haven’t learned from our mistakes: we keep falling back into the same old patterns, fighting the same old wars.

“journey of the mind” poster designed by @rejanedalbello for a touring exhibition by @withoutshapewithoutform
concerned with the impact covid-19 had on our mental health, the sikh community saw value in sharing the learnings of the gurus (of whom there are 11 in total) about the mind – understanding it, our ability to control it, and how to find a higher level peace within it for everyone – and how that might be represented through words and art.
focusing on the word mind – the typography lines expand, expressing the journey or path that the mind takes in order to welcome and embrace self-discovery – moving deliberately from the “darkness” into the “light”. this journey is what the gurus teach, to show us how to unlock the meaning of that journey within our own minds. we explore various visuals of the stroke path through motion and across all the exhibition touchpoints, inviting everyone to learn more about the journey of the mind.
