The second Wunderkabinet collection (WKT.02:1:1) is a small selection of items in square(ish) formats from the
@recollection_au graphic design archive (1960–1990).
The Deviant Format (extract)
‘Neither portrait nor landscape, the square’s equal proportions enabled the systematic subdivision of the page, allowing hierarchy and image placement to be determined by proportion rather than convention. It became a symbol of clarity, order and universal legibility — values closely aligned with the Modernist movement.
Australian designers of the 1960s–90s were similarly drawn to the square, likely influenced by what they experienced in their international travels and saw in the pages of Graphis and Gebrauchsgraphik. Across art books, annual reports and promotional publications of varying scales, the format became a hallmark of designers shaping the local profession’.
