Along with the engineers at @bymonotype , I’m proud and honored to have designed the new PBS Sans typeface with direction from Lippincott. Check FB or Twitter for all the links—here’s a few images from the Lippincott project page and PBS style guide.

I recently tagged Studio Us (@hellothisisus ) to redesign the graphics and create new animations for #KairosSans and oh boy, did they deliver! Lots of sport, energy, and tech—prefect for this typeface. With the release of the new Variable formats, it was a good time for a refresh. More soon!

I had a great time at @spacedive313 in Detroit this weekend with some new and old friends! No detail was overlooked in this Star Wars themed pop up venue of music, food, vendors, and performance arts of all kinds. My first experience with a serious cosplay thing like this—I understand the scene better now. Craftsmanship and creativity is king, in building and performing, with overflowing acceptance and camaraderie of all peoples.
As a grown man, few things bring me to tears. One of them is the National Parks. I call it “having a moment.” It’s a combination of the overwhelming natural beauty, awe at the shear scale, and often months or years of anticipation. Not to mention the gratitude and humbling reminder we are caretakers of the delicate planet. The Chisos Mountains in Big Bend and the relatively nearby Carlsbad Caverns are some of the most special places I have ever seen. Parks, large and small, near and far, improve my quality of life and hopefully make me a better person.
For these sketches, I set out to explore some comic book lettering styles, focusing on the dramatic figure-ground relationship with inherent motion and sound implications. What could I bring from my lived experience to these? Fonts, of course!
It’s been a long time since I’ve done some lettering work, I guess I’ve had other life things going on, and that’s ok. Curiosity and play are part of my values and creative process. Most of the time it’s just enjoying video games, Legos, reading, movies, gardening, or walking, without the pressure to be productive. Sometimes that play produces something that is fun to share. I wouldn’t have been inspired to make this if I hadn’t followed my curiosity. It’s just a trail of joy. Easy as that.
Over Christmas break, Christine gifted me some Frank Miller Batman comics, and I added some Sin City and Initial D by Shuichi Shigeno to my small collection. I was never introduced to comic books as a kid, I would have loved them back then, but no one around me was into it. “That’s ok, it’s not too late,” I thought. Who’s going to stop me from enjoying it and learning from it? No one but myself.

🇮🇹 My first visit to Italy. Venice has old-world charm and built beauty in spades. The city is part engineering marvel, part art museum, part tourist jungle, but mostly elegantly understated and richly cultured. Often laid back with elevated craftsmanship. It’s cliche to say that travel changes you, but the further I reach away from home, the better global citizen I become.
My image collection of interesting vehicles across Iceland. Lots of wild off-road things and some EVs. Even the ride-share scooters had studded tires! 🛞
While I spent most of my spring break in the gorgeous Icelandic natural landscape, I did find a few bits of type. Wait until you see my vehicle image collection though!
In my seventeenth year at Monotype, I’m starting a new role as an Executive Creative Director. Sometimes the next chapter comes on fast as the page curls in front of your eyes.
2024 was about seeing new places and paths for me. I was fortunate to see entirely new landscapes in my Grand Canyon and Berlin visits. Along the path, I scrutinized my work life intensely. The end of the year is like a scenic overlook at the end of a trail, and I feast on the reflection opportunity. I believe rest, much like negative space in design, is an active element, not a void to be filled.
During the holiday break, I took time to sharpen and document my values, as a way to guide myself and my goals. They are currently:
1. Curiosity & Creativity. “What if?”
2. Dedication & Duty. “Grit and Grind.”
3. Peace, Kindness, and Well-being. “People and places.”
Wishing you a happy and productive 2025!
Cheers,
Terrance

The Monotype Studio summit was in Berlin this week, and it was great to see all of my colleagues in person and visit the special collection of neon signs at the Buchstabenmuseum! ⚡️🔠🔆
