Jakarta, Indonesia is a vibrant city with a rich typographic landscape.
“Every corner of the city has its own character, from old shop signs and street food stalls to large billboards and modern storefronts. Everything feels different, and that’s what makes it so interesting.”
Join us for a typographic tour of Jakarta with type designer Gumpita Rahayu (@gumpita ) of @Tokotypefoundry , showcasing old colonial type, vernacular signage, and even a typeface he designed that has become part of the city's identity.
Indonesia is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, home to more than 700 languages. While traditional scripts remain an intrinsic part of Indonesia’s culture, most written communication for publishing and design uses the Latin alphabet, presenting type designers with unique challenges.

“It’s fun to explain my job to someone who’s never thought about type before. You point to how many places type exists, and it’s like you’ve opened their eyes to this thing that’s been in front of them all along.”
