Type Here Judge 2026
Chris Flack is Design Director at renowned design agency Strategy Creative in Ōtautahi Christchurch. His career has taken him from one side of the world to the other. Along the way, he helped put a small New Zealand town on the map by creating a new time zone and launched TEDx in New Zealand by exploding over 1,000 ping-pong balls. He’s also rebranded Christmas, convinced the design world to embrace Comic Sans (for a good cause), and made statistics funny enough to get Dunedin talking. His recent project, Mate Act Now, used a digital protest to spark conversation about climate action. His work has appeared everywhere from Mashable to Creative Review, and his designs are exhibited at the Mexican Museum of Design.

Sonia Mijatov

Type Here Judge 2026
Sonia Mijatov is a Senior Designer at Guardians Ahiauaha in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Part Kiwi, part Croatian, and proudly straddling both, Sonia’s crush on typography shines through with the brands she works on, and in the typefaces and hand lettering she crafts as part of her personal work. Always in search of the uncommon, she often finds herself playing with unconventional executions of irreverent ideas. Her Type Here 2025 winning entry, ‘The Fabric of Society’, was described by the judges as ‘a unique typographic indictment of current socio-political trends’.

Type Here 2025
Our theme for Type Here 3 is Wāwāhia Te Tahā (Break The Calabash). This is framed by the whakataukī ‘ko te mahi a te tamariki, he wāwāhi tahā’ (the activities of children break calabashes). It speaks to the inquisitive nature of tamariki as they explore the world and its objects, necessarily breaking precious items within it.
In this spirit, our theme foregrounds risk-taking and experimentation. We encourage the application of typography in unexpected and inventive ways. Because true progress requires risk.
The jury will base their decisions on four criteria:
- Utilising typography to bring an idea or creative expression to life
- Presenting a unique or progressive design that propels the medium forward
- Well-crafted implementation
- Relevance to the theme

Designer: Sonia Mijatov @deskofsonia
A giant plastic plaid bag. Our coming-of-age totem. In the face of moving houses, cities & lifetimes - these bags carry us. Despite the flimsy exterior they’re a manifestation of our & ‘she’ll be right’ attitude and a bit of dumb luck. We ignore bulging zips barely holding our worldly possessions together, or the fabric threatening to rip, schlepping our baggage place to place.
Built by sewing letters hand cut from the bag itself, this entry shines a light on a humble staple in kiwi culture, whether crumpled at the back of a cupboard or a proud tapestry in our garages.
