We are delighted to share the good news: thank you to @HelenFrankenthalerFoundation for selecting Tyler School of Art and Architecture as a #FrankenthalerClimateInitiative awardee. In collaboration with @EnvCulturePrs and @RockyMtnInst , this initiative is the first grantmaking program of its kind that catalyzes energy efficiency at visual arts organizations. Supported by an FCI Implementation Grant, we will complete an initial phase of the Glass Studio’s electrification plan. This first phase includes upgrading the furnace room’s electrical infrastructure and replacing one of three gas-fired furnaces with a high-efficiency electric model. The studio’s conversion will reduce an estimated 23.9 percent of its greenhouse gas emissions—approximately 48 tons of CO₂ annually—and serves as a tangible expression of Tyler’s commitment to climate action in arts education. "Receiving the Frankenthaler Implementation Award is an incredible milestone for the Tyler Glass Program and our entire school," said Program Head of Glass and Associate Professor Jessica Julius. "This support allows us to take meaningful action toward reducing our carbon footprint while modeling sustainable infrastructure changes that directly support our evolving curriculum. It’s part of a larger initiative to empower students to become thoughtful, responsible makers, leading the next generation of artists committed to sustainability, equity, and innovation." In addition to the furnace upgrade, faculty across Tyler’s various departments are revising curricula in tandem, embedding sustainability into studio methods, materials research, and interdisciplinary pedagogy—prompting emerging artists to engage deeply with environmental responsibility as a core component of their practice. Check out the press release to learn more and join us in congratulating our fellow awardees. #FrankenthalerClimate #HelenFrankenthaler #HelenFrankenthalerFoundation

✨We’re thrilled to share Will Strauss’ @will.strauss.studio BFA exhibition. His show, “Too Far Gone”, which includes work in ceramic and glass, is currently on view at the Tyler Atrium. Join us for the opening reception this Friday, April 24, 5–8 pm 🎉 “Too Far Gone uses rats as a lens to imagine a post-human world. Rats hold such direct ties to human society, and as masters of our waste, they have become a symbol of disease and decay. Our society’s overconsumption of materials and excess production of waste is the real problem.” Too Far Gone 🗓️ April 22-25 🎉Reception: April 24, 5-8pm 📍Tyler Atrium #bfa #exhibition #tylerglassprogram #tylerartandarchitecture #ceramic

✨We are excited to share highlights from the exhibition “(N)everlasting: permanence sometimes”. This exhibition is currently on view at the Tyler lobby with a reception this Friday, April 24, 5-8pm! 🙌 🌱“Nothing lasts forever. Change is continual, though not always consistent; it can be subtle or dramatic, microscopic or vast, fleeting or evolving. Materials, bodies, perceptions, emotions, relationships, culture, and nature are always in flux: weathering, eroding, decaying, growing, fading, forming, cycling. This exhibition is a collaborative, site-responsive endeavor. It was developed through dialogue between Laurin Aman’s Bio-Prototyping students and Paige L Morris’ Mold-Making Technology students. The works build on research and experimentation, using a range of materials and techniques. The exhibition considers how individual works relate to one another and to the atrium space as a whole, merging making with curatorial practices. Participants are invited to investigate impermanence—conceptually, materially, and experientially—drawing on mold-making processes, material life cycles, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This exhibition challenges us to look beyond the making of things, prompting reflection on how objects, spaces, and materials exist, transform, and are experienced over time. It asks us to reconsider the legacy of permanence in architectural and material practices—where rigid structures and overlooked afterlives often contribute to environmental harm. By proposing a shift to methods that embrace impermanence, the exhibition urges us to reimagine our relationship to change as a step toward environmental sustainability.” 🌟Participating students: Aditya Choudhari Andrew Saravay BEFEA Zewde Brad Pendino Dealia Owens Doaa Sherif Finn Bellomo Harvir Kaur Ingrid R Koppisch Kalin Pietraszewski Kathy Guo Loon Laughlin Lily Plastaras Liv Rogers Maria Missaoui Mia Casey Robert Tranter Roxy Gandolfe Sabriel Watkins Samantha Bleeker Selah Bowman Timnah Rosenshine Val Jacobson Valentina Martinez Montoya Verena Rezkalla Zoszia Zabrenski @paigelizbethmorris @laurinaman #tylerartandarchitecture #exhibition #tylerglassprogram #moldmaking #collaboration

💫Congratulations to Max Boyce @maximilianartboyce for an amazing MFA thesis exhibition! 🙌 Join us this Friday, 5-8pm, to celebrate! 🎉 Statement: “What is our relationship to the built spaces we occupy? Echoes of Expansion grapples with the tension between progress and loss. Max investigates defunct construction sites in Philadelphia, first by exploring their material landscapes and later by researching the progress and impediments of their development histories. Here materials are recontextualized as an opportunity to reconsider their value. Max strives to open a space of collaboration with materials, acknowledging human-nonhuman entanglements.” 💬 Echoes of Expansion 🗓️April 15-18 🌟Reception: April 17, 5-8pm 📍Temple Contemporary #tylerschoolofartandarchitecture #tylerglassprogram #templecontemporary #mfathesis #exhibition

It’s been an absolute delight and privilege to make a site specific installation in this historic Philadelphia church. In my research I have been thinking through the ways that glass as a technology has developed in tandem with the concept of transparency. Glass, in all its optical wonder, has enabled us to see through walls and has extended vision so far beyond the body; yet even the clearest glass retains a level of opacity. Hence, transparency is not a material reality, rather a concept that developed as a result of what material has enabled us to do. We live in a world that craves certainty, where mystery and paradox have been marginalized; but glass, as a prime culprit in propagating misplaced ideas of transparency, has a unique capacity to recenter mystery, paradox, and deeper inquiry. I’ll talk more about this research at my artist talk on April 24th at 7pm! I hope you can come to engage this conversation and see my installation in person!
