The entry sequence at the Forest Residence isn't an afterthought. It's the first thing we designed. These clients work their property. Firewood, mud, dogs, kids, everything comes through this door. So the mudroom and laundry were placed right at the threshold: a dedicated decompression zone between the outside and the rest of the home. From there, a set of stairs pulls you down toward the private spaces below, and the hallway opens forward into the kitchen. Simple, clear, no wasted steps. Natural materials carry through from the start. Stone tile underfoot, warm wood, white walls that stay out of the way and let the forest do the work. #homedesign #mudroom #entrydesign #accessibledesign #universaldesign #functionaldesign #design #buildingdesign #residentialdesign #housedesign #interiordesign #homedesign #bcdesign #mountaindesign #mountainliving #revelstoke #britishcolumbia #bc #forestliving #naturalhome #passivedesign #materiality #modernhome #modernliving #newbuild #construction

The main floor is organized around a simple idea: arrive dirty, clean up, then step into the forest. Entry is from under a continuous carport roof, the same roof form that carries across the whole main level. From there, a mudroom and laundry catches everything that comes in from working the property before you ever reach the living spaces. Beyond that threshold, the plan opens up. The kitchen anchors the heart of the home, with full-height glazing and a generous deck looking out into untouched forest and a rocky outcrop in the distance. The living and dining rooms float over the lower floor below, sharing those same views. The guest bedroom and full shower are tucked alongside, accessible, self-contained, and on the same level as all the main living. The whole thing was designed so a guest with accessibility needs could arrive and feel completely at home without ever needing the stairs. #floorplan #homedesign #mudroom #entrydesign #accessibledesign #universaldesign #functionaldesign #design #buildingdesign #residentialdesign #housedesign #interiordesign #homedesign #bcdesign #mountaindesign #mountainliving #revelstoke #britishcolumbia #bc #forestliving #naturalhome #passivedesign #materiality #modernhome #modernliving #newbuild #construction

The Forest Residence takes its name seriously. The building sits into the hillside rather than on top of it, a continuous roof form threading through the rocky slope, anchored by the trees that remained after the site was cleared. The carport pulls the roofline out toward the road, giving the home a low, grounded presence that doesn't compete with the forest around it. From the outside, the glazing reads as openings carved into the hill. The deck pushes out from the main floor, suspended over the slope below. The rocky outcrop beyond frames the whole composition, something we noticed on the first site visit and never stopped designing toward. The Forest Residence doesn't announce itself. It just appears, quietly, between the trees. #exteriordesign #houserender #3drender #enscape #residentialrender #hillsidedesign #forestedhome #design #buildingdesign #residentialdesign #housedesign #interiordesign #homedesign #bcdesign #mountaindesign #mountainliving #revelstoke #britishcolumbia #bc #forestliving #naturalhome #passivedesign #materiality #modernhome #modernliving #newbuild #construction

The Forest Residence began with a single question: how do you build a home that feels like it belongs to the forest, not just sits in it? The Forest Residence is the first phase of a longer vision, a property that will eventually include a series of small rental cabins tucked along a wetland at the base of the slope. But before any of that, the owners needed a family home. The site we chose sits high on a steep, rocky hillside, intentionally separated from the future cabin zone, but close enough for easy caretaking during rental season. A road was cut into the slope to reach it. The trees were cleared only where they needed to be. Everything else stayed. This is where the Forest Residence begins. #sitedesign #landdesign #siteplanning #hillsidehome #slopedsite #wetland #cabinlife #design #buildingdesign #residentialdesign #housedesign #interiordesign #homedesign #bcdesign #mountaindesign #mountainliving #revelstoke #britishcolumbia #bc #forestliving #naturalhome #passivedesign #materiality #modernhome #modernliving #newbuild #construction

Last up in our meet the team series is Designer, Jonathon. Based in our Revelstoke studio, Jonathon brings experience across a wide range of project types, from public art and urban planning to large-scale multi-residential and high-end residential design. With a Master of Architecture and time across several Sydney firms, he's developed a strong sense of how design thinking shifts, and what stays constant, as a project changes in scale or complexity. He approaches each project as a continuous idea, from the chair in the room to the building on the street, less a collection of parts than a single cohesive thing. Outside the studio, you'll likely find him either deep in the pain cave or on a patio. More often than not though, he's in the mountains, chasing trails long after most sensible people have called it a day.

This time in our meet the team series is Designer, Thomas. Based in our Nelson studio, Thomas brings a practiced, detail-oriented approach shaped by his background in building design and years of experience working on multi-residential projects in Australia. From social and affordable housing to high-end inner-city developments, he’s developed a well-rounded understanding of how design performs across a wide range of contexts and scales. His approach is grounded in environmentally conscious, utilitarian design, with a focus on thoughtful use of local materials and context-driven solutions. The result is work that feels integrated, functional, and built to stand the test of time. When he’s not designing, Thomas heads for the mountains and is most at home on skis or a bike, making the most of what the West Kootenays have to offer. In the winter, he volunteers as a ski patroller at Whitewater Ski Resort, giving back to the mountain community he calls home. Beyond the Kootenays, he’s drawn to remote, lesser-known places, always chasing the next off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Next up in our meet the team series is Senior Designer, James. As Senior Designer at our Nelson studio, James leads all our projects across the lower Kootenays. His design sensibilities are rooted in natural, regionally appropriate materials and a calm, considered approach that promotes simplicity and ease of living. With a long background in carpentry and millwork, he brings deep technical knowledge of both building and interiors, ensuring designs are cohesively thought through from the inside out. Outside the office, you'll find him renovating his own home, helping friends with theirs, or exploring the Nelson backcountry. If you have a project in mind or just want to connect over a coffee or a beer, reach out, he'd love to hear from you.

Over the next few weeks, we’re introducing the team behind TWO73, starting with Founder and Director, Kelvin. Kelvin is the owner and operator of TWO73 Building Design & Interiors with a hands-on, construction-first approach to design. With a Degree in Architectural Science, a Diploma in Architectural Technologies, certificates in cabinet making, welding, Passive House, thermography and experience as a carpenter are evident in his approach to design and construction. He blends a dedication to craft and technical know-how with a focus on occupant comfort, sustainability, and well-resolved design. His philosophy is simple: if it’s well designed, it should make life better to live in. When he steps away from the studio, he can usually be found hootin’ and hollerin’ down a mountain, either on snowboard or mountain bike, or disappearing into the never-ending renovation of his own home, which may or may not be finished someday due to the never-ending explorations of materials and craft while chasing kids around.
