This series of work is inspired by the Goryeon Celadon, which patterns are carved into the clay body, inlaid with white and black slip, and finally reduction fired.
We started adding the pattern of lily of the valley in the beginning, thinking that it looks charming and delicate. Later, when we found out its meaning, which is the return of happiness, the motif became even more meaningful to us.
In life, we always have to take the good with the bad, the smile with the sad. If life is a constant cycle between happiness and sorrow, we might
sometimes caught ourselves wondering, especially during difficult times, when happiness will return again. Lily of the valley feels like a quiet prayer for the return of happiness amidst adversity. It serves as a reminder that the challenging days are temporary and better days are coming.
As for the Koi fish, it is a motif with elegant curves and intricate patterns. It also represents perseverance, strength and prosperity. In Japanese, 'koi' is a homophone for 恋, another word that means 'affection' or 'love', so koi are also symbols of love and friendship in Japan. We hope that these motifs that we have chosen adds more meaning to the tableware that we create, gently reminding people of more goodness, hope and warmth in every day life.
"Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness."
— Carl G. Jung

We are always concerned about how the rim feels too hot when holding an aroma cup, which almost always has a closed rim. For this design, we use the motif of a ginkgo leaf, attached to the body of the aroma cup, to be used as a small handle. It looks like a pair of wings growing out of a bulbous shape cup. 🪽
