Now, with the growing issue of turtle strandings here in the UK, we’re committed to driving education, awareness, and real action forward.

The Leatherback nesting season in Sumatra, Indonesia has come to an end, with only a few final nests remaining in the hatchery, which are about to hatch.
This year, we recorded a total of 323 leatherback turtle nests across our project sites:
177 on Simeulue
109 on Nias
19 on Sipora
18 on Salaut Besar
Each nest contributes valuable data to learn more about the data-deficient subpopulation of leatherback sea turtles in the Northeastern Indian Ocean.
Together, we continue to protect the future of these remarkable turtles.🐢

Do you remember the Leatherbacks Yuli and Fitri?
A few months ago, in January, we equipped four nesting leatherback turtles with satellite transmitters on the island of Simeulue, Indonesia - naming them after some of our dedicated team members.
While two of the trackers unfortunately stopped transmitting shortly after deployment, we’re excited to share that the other two - Yuli & Fitri - are still sending data. Since tagging, they have been steadily swimming westward and are now crossing the vast Indian Ocean, passing the Maldives and likely heading toward the African coast.
Each signal we receive gives us a rare glimpse into their migration routes, helping us identify critical habitats and strengthen conservation strategies for this vulnerable population.
These insights are incredibly valuable — every kilometer tracked brings us closer to protecting these ancient travelers.

⚠️ Important note:
All tagging procedures are carried out exclusively by trained researchers for scientific and conservation purposes. The transmitters are attached in a way that does not interfere with the turtles’ natural behavior. As always, we aim to minimize disturbance by using low-impact methods and working within a very limited time window during nesting.
This work is conducted in collaboration with @ecosystemimpactfoundation & @yayasanpenyu and is supported by the UK Government through the Darwin Initiative and other donors.

A stranded whale is moving all of Germany right now — and it’s a tragedy when something like this happens in the Baltic Sea.
Unfortunately for us, it’s nothing new: at our project site on Boa Vista, we witness whale strandings every year. It’s a harsh reality that rarely makes headlines, yet happens far too often. But behind these incidents lie larger issues: human impact, marine pollution, and especially waste like fishing nets from industrial fishing that endangers wildlife — whales, turtles, and countless other species.
We don’t want to stand by and watch. That’s why we regularly organize beach cleanups to reduce the amount of waste reaching the ocean. And last year, we took another important step by completing a whale rescue training program — so we’re prepared to act if the moment comes again.
Because while a stranded whale captures our attention for a moment, the underlying problem is a constant threat. And so is our commitment to do something about it.

Last week, our Deputy Director @yulisyamsuni traveled to Hawai'i to attend the 44th International @seaturtlesociety Symposium (ISTS), where she represented us and our sister organization @yayasanpenyu (YPI). This year’s theme, “Kaiāulu” - a Hawaiian word meaning “community,” as well as “neighborhood” or “village” - reflected the close-knit nature of the global sea turtle conservation community and celebrated how collaboration and mutual support help achieve conservation successes around the world.
During the conference, she shared insights into our conservation work, gave a presentation, and presented a scientific poster highlighting our ongoing projects. Beyond the sessions, the symposium was a great opportunity to connect with the international sea turtle conservation community, exchange experiences, and discuss the challenges we all face in protecting sea turtles.
Yuliana was joined by veterinarian Dr. Harrison Watler @t.u.r.t.l.e_vet_services and Turtle Foundation USA representative Reisa Latorra @terapnstn , who were also part of the event and helped represent our work and collaborations.
Meetings like the ISTS remind us how important international exchange and cooperation are for successful conservation work — and how valuable it is to stay connected with people working for the same goal around the world.
