Inaugurated in 1822, the Cementerio de la Recoleta in Buenos Aires houses the graves of many historical personalities of the Argentine elite in mausoleums of a variety of styles from art deco to beaux arts to baroque. It is 14 acres in size and is still being used by the rich and famous, although space has essentially run out. Hard to believe but the last time I was (truly) in Montreal was for the Expo. Yes, 1967. I was a newly-arrived immigrant kid and this was our family’s first road trip in North America. The Expo and the architecture built around the event was incredible, and the ultimate reason for the road trip. Most impressive was Moshe Safdie’s Habitat, a playful LEGO-like exercise in geometric repetition…in the early brutalist style. Although it shows its age, it is as impressive today as it was 57 years ago. Not far, by the Lachine Canal, is the old Farine Five Roses flour mill, with its iconic silos. It is a fading beauty built in the early 1940s which still stands proud and majestic like a gothic cathedral. The Carretera Austral is a 770 mile road in the way-south of Chile in the Aysén region of the country. Built mainly from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, it is one of the more scenic roads for outdoors tourism on the planet, replete with glaciers, lakes, deep forests, fjords, mountains, ice fields, etc. It takes about 3 weeks to drive through this road in a leisurely manner, but not many have that time in today’s world, so most travelers choose to experience a section of the carretera at a time.
