#InTheStudio with 2025 Artist-in-Residence Angela Lynn Tucker: “I’m a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. When you work on films, it’s incredible, very collaborative. You work with a lot of people, and I was wanting to do work that was a lot more personal. About a year or two ago, I started to become more interested in collage, and that’s been a real switch for me. I needed to be in a more introspective space.” Angela Lynn Tucker (@tuckergurl ) is an artist based in New Orleans and was a Summer 2025 Artist-in-Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center. This interview was filmed at the Joan Mitchell Center in July 2025. Learn more about Tucker’s work at joanmitchellfoundation.org/angela-lynn-tucker. Hey! Today is Give NOLA Day—I’m raising money for The Front, an artist collective I’m part of in the 9th Ward. I’ve grown so much artistically being a part of this collective. Next month I will curate my first show with some amazing women of color. We do everything ourselves to put up 4 shows every month. It’s a huge undertaking and I’m always in awe of our 19 other members. We’re trying to hit $10K today—if you’re able, even $10 helps a lot. /organization/thefront

I’ve been wanting to curate a show like this for a long time. Time Is a Shapeshifter is a group exhibition centering female-identified artists of color over 40 in Louisiana—artists holding memory, survival, and lived experience in their work. This one is important to me.
I want to reach women whose voices don’t always get centered in these spaces. You don’t need to call yourself an artist.
If you make something and it matters to you, I want to see it. Please share widely with anyone who might be interested. Deadline: April 20 Shout out to Jazz and Heritage Foundation for their support with this.

Tucker is Assistant Professor of Documentary Expression with SouthDocs and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. 'The Inquisitor' tells the story of Barbara Jordan, who rose from Houston's Fifth Ward to become Texas's first Black state senator and the first Southern Black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Following the screening, Janelle Minor, MA candidate in Southern Studies, led the Q&A. Want to see the film? You’re in luck! Have you listened to our most recent episode yet? In this clip from our latest episode, director Angela Lynn Tucker reflects on the early life of Barbara Jordan—growing up in Houston’s Fifth Ward in a loving, tight-knit community that shaped her strength and conviction. @tuckergurl @theinquisitorfilm @independentlens 👴 From a grandfather who saw her potential and carried her confidence, ⛪ To a pastor father and church community that nurtured her voice, 🎓 To becoming the only woman on her debate team at Texas Southern University… These formative influences helped forge the moral clarity and commanding presence that would later captivate the nation. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation now. Today — The Inquisitor broadcasts on PBS. I’ve started and restarted this post because it’s hard to put this gratitude into words. This film exists because of an extraordinary team who worked for years with care, belief, and commitment — often without the compensation they deserved. What carried us was Barbara — her clarity, her courage, and the urgency of her ideas — and that gave us the drive to bring this film into the world. I have to shout out PBS, Independent Lens, and ITVS. I would not have a career without public television. That’s true for so many of my friends, and being able to share this film at this scale is something I never take for granted. To the funders, festivals, friends, film community, and my family — thank you. I miss my parents deeply in moments like this, but I also feel incredibly close to them. Especially my mom. Her creativity and everyday commitment to public service shaped me in ways I understand more now. I dedicate this film to her today. This film is a biography of Barbara Jordan — but it’s also about the cyclical nature of history. The film ends (spoiler alert — but it’s not The Sixth Sense, relax) with an invitation: be inquisitors. Don’t be passive. Accountability belongs to all of us. I believe Barbara came into my life for a reason. I feel her spirit every day. She changed how I think about time — where we show up, who we show up for, and what actually matters. If you’ve shared the film — thank you. Watch The Inquisitor on PBS Independent Lens. Check your local listing or stream on pbs.org and the Independent Lens YouTube channel. Thank you. I love you all. @independentlens @itvsindies @fordfoundation @chickeneggfilms @sundance_catalyst @sundanceorg @firelight_media @blackpublicmedia
