The largest private reserve in South Africa spans 120,000 hectares of the southern Kalahari. No fences between you and the horizon. No other camps or lodges. No crowds. When you vote for Tswalu in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards, you're not just recognising a safari experience. You're amplifying the case for conservation-led travel, and for protecting one of Africa's most remarkable wild spaces. Voting is open now. The Korannaberg's rocky terrain suits the brown hyena well. Largely nocturnal and naturally wary, this elusive animal moves through this landscape on its own terms. Seen rarely, and always briefly. Photographs like these, by @MarcusWestbergPhotography , are the exception. #Tswalu

At Tswalu, the Korannaberg is impossible to ignore. This ancient quartzite range shapes rainfall, drives biodiversity, and creates a unique habitat for animals that favour the protection offered by rocky terrain, including klipspringer, Hartmann's mountain zebra and leopard. Read more in the latest Conservation Journal: Link in bio. Reel: @ChrisJoubert #Tswalu

African wild dogs are no longer biologically independent. Without active management, coordinated translocations, and reserves large enough to absorb a fast-breeding, wide-ranging pack, the species cannot sustain itself. As South Africa's largest privately protected area, Tswalu has a critical role to play in that effort and the story goes deeper than you might expect. Read the full story via the link in bio. Images @MarcusWestbergPhotography #Tswalu @endangeredwildlifetrust @ewt_carnivores

The Korannaberg is a prominent quartzite mountain range running north to south through Tswalu – and it shapes everything within the reserve. Water seeps through ancient rock for months after the rains, sustaining vegetation and wildlife. April's Conservation Journal explores four of the valleys that cut through the mountain, the wildlife corridors they create, and what an exceptional rainfall season has brought to life within them. Link in bio. Images @ChrisJoubert #Tswalu #ConservationJournal

For a large antelope that relies on stillness and concealment over speed, the valleys and foothills of the mountain range are ideal habitat for kudu. The rocky slopes and dense bush of the Korannaberg provide exactly the cover these browsers need – to feed, to move, and to disappear. Images @MarcusWestbergPhotography #Tswalu

Operating as a pack, wild dogs are adept at closing in on potential prey. Young oryx (gemsbok) calves, still a little unsteady on their legs, are sheltered by the herd. They stand their ground, horns lowered, ready to strike and defend their young. The youngsters are safe – for now. This is survival in the southern Kalahari, where every day brings a new test of instinct and resilience. Reel @IvanUeckermann #Tswalu

Tswalu's giraffe population has increased 10-fold since the reserve's first game count in 1999. That 27-year record of unbroken monitoring recently contributed directly to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation's national census, the most comprehensive assessment of southern giraffe in South Africa ever undertaken. Nearly half of the country's wild southern giraffe are protected on private land. Local conservation, it turns out, has a very long reach. Read the full story at the link in bio. #Tswalu Images @marcuswestbergphotography

Captured off the cuff by guide Stohm Lewthwaite, this recent sighting of the northern pride was a treat. The eight cubs are now big and bold enough to be highly entertaining when mobile. Meanwhile, the two resident males are spending more time close to the family group, but are kept in check by the females when required! #Tswalu Video footage @memories_of_a_field_guide

They weigh less than a kilogram, yet they face down puff adders, brutal heat, and shrinking food supplies. Despite these challenges, meerkats endure. National Geographic photographer Thomas Peschak spent time at Tswalu in 2025 documenting the meerkat clans of the southern Kalahari, and the result is a stunning feature in the magazine's January 2026 issue. We sat down with Thomas to find out what it took to bring this story to life, and what keeps drawing him back to the southern Kalahari. Link in bio to read the full interview. Images @thomaspeschak #Tswalu

Tswalu is the kind of place that reminds you why you started guiding. Big spaces, proper tracking, and time on foot looking for predators. Also one of the best environments to train—detail matters here, and the guiding team lives it. If you’re looking for a safari that’s raw, real, and quietly exceptional, this is it. #kalahari #safari #travel #fgasa
