Tanz Black is the collective name for movement based theatrical works conceived, directed, or choreographed by Tsiambwom M. Akuchu Borrowing it’s name from the German Tanztheater (“dance theatre”) which grew out of German Expressionist dance in Weimar Germany and 1920s Vienna, TanzBlack Theatre or Tanz Black, creates work in that lineage of theater/dance making while focusing on representing movement forms rooted in Black culture. Especially Hip-Hop and Street Dances . Tanz Balck aims to reshape contemporary concert dance by introducing new movement forms and choreographic strategies rooted in non-western dance practices to generate profoundly new theatrical experiences. #tanzblack #concertdance #hiphopdance

FORWARD, Always had it’s east coast premier for @dancenownyc 29th annual festival, and unfortunately its last one. Incredibly proud to have been a part of this wonderful organizations legacy for the past 7 years. The piece centers around the civil rights movement in the 1960s, and I was asking myself the question, what is the pace of change? Who leads progress in society, and why them? What is the labor, effort, and stamina necessary to create true and meaningful change? In this piece, I focus on imagery from the civil rights marches in the 1960s and creating choreography that centers the philosophies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Trying to get closer to the idea of art as activism. Keeping in the spirit of resistance and rebellion, I decided to use Sinnerman by Nina Simone as a reflection of criminalized blackness. The title, ‘FORWARD, Always’, borrows from Obama‘s 2012 campaign slogan and the quote from Dr. Martin Luther King that says “… my friends, all I’m trying to say is that if we are to go FORWARD today, we’ve got to go back and rediscover some mighty precious values that we’ve left behind”. #streetdance #concertdance #housedance #dancetheater #jazz #ninasimone #sinnerman #stamina #dancetheatre #footwork #danceperformance #physicaltheatre #physicaltheater #movementartist #performanceartist #movementart

“ALTERITY” - the state of being other or different; otherness. This is one of my most recent works and an excerpt of an evening length performance premiering in June 2025. The pieces in the show focus on identity; specifically at the intersection of blackness and masculinity in an American context. Alterity is an exploration of contemporary masculinity as defined by history and one’s personal identity. Who you are and your complexities as constrained and defined by how your ethnic and cultural identity have been defined historically, especially with the legacy of slavery. This piece was created in collaboration with @cristian.cb4 who infused the work with his own ideas, thoughts, and lived experiences. Thanks brother. #streetdance #concertdance #housedance #dancetheatre #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #colinstetson

“Earthbound” This piece was created as a follow up to 2 other pieces; ‘Every^Man’ and ‘FORWARD, Always’. While those two pieces deal particularly with history and culture, this one (which started as a short gesture solo based off my memories of the experience of immigrating to the United States), is an Afro futuristic take on the experience of living in the US. It follows an abstract narrative of a non human entity, (I was thinking either technological or alien), waking up in a black body. The subjective experience of the historically and culturally inform present. This is now is part of a trio I perform which include ‘Every^Man’ and ‘FORWARD, Always’. I call the performed collection, Tryptych. #streetdance #concertdance #housedance #dancetheater #atjazz #foxtooth #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth
