This Friday, May 9, the Texas House is voting on two dangerous bills that directly target trans people: HB 229: Is an attempt to erase the existence of trans people by forcing a rigid, binary definition of sex and banning updates to gender markers on IDs. HB 778: Would make transition-related healthcare nearly impossible to access by targeting insurance coverage. We say NO. On Saturday, March 29, members of the community are coming together at Once Over Coffee in Austin to build a memorial in honor of Sam Nordquist. Please join us in honoring Sam’s life by bringing flowers, candles, photos, talismans, or anything you would like to add to Sam’s memorial. We will be gathering at 6pm to start assembling the memorial. There will be musical accompaniments. Everyone is encouraged to come and go as they please. We are looking for a card table to act as the base of the main section of the memorial! In a disturbing, but unsurprising turn of events, DPS and the State of Texas is doubling down on their escalation against the rights of trans people. In a letter to Ken Paxton from DPS Director Steven C. McCraw he says “DPS may have altered many government sex records in mistaken reliance on court orders that either (a) lacked any basis in law or authority to bind DPS or (b) were not relevant proof under statutory authority to correct mistaken records of an individual’s sex. On other occasions, when DPS has made an erroneous entry to a person’s record, the agency has on its own initiative corrected such a mistake, including by issuing a new driver’s license to the person concerned and directing the person to destroy the old license.” … “If DPS’s past changes to applicants’ ‘sex’ based on gender-change orders were inconsistent with state law, may DPS voluntarily correct its own introduction of inaccurate sex information?” Not only that, but we have received word that the Department of Health and Human Services is no longer allowing people to change their gender on their birth certificate, with the office workers given no reason as to why. No public announcement has been made about this fact. These are horrendous violations of the rights of trans people, and they deserve our anger. We call on all trans and GNC Texans to get with their community, fight back against these disgusting attacks, and stay tuned for our future events as we organize and fight against them too. We will not stand by during what is essentially a campaign to criminalize being transgender in Texas. We as a community must stand together and mobilize against these rotten politicians and cops. Malcolm X said “history is always on the side of the oppressed.” If the State of Texas wants to oppress us even further, then we need to show them what we’re made of.
