A little photo dump to let everyone know I'm still kicking after a trip back home with JeanEva. Had to go up for a doctors visit (tail surgery) but also stopped by @washingtongallerywaco to check out @t.s.harris but was also BLOWN AWAY by @sandersonartist and @lauraclayart as well. Stella and Mia are as good as they've ever been (STINKY) and to end the week I met up with some friends I hadn't seen in over a decade to take turns sipping exactly one beer. Also I got food poisoning from clay pot. @pj1eight FOREVER

Medical Memory:Remember Me When the Candle Lights are Gleaming 2023, inkjet print, ice pick, 1 cu ft part 1/2 How we are treated for our illnesses is a defining aspect for identity. Some aren’t able to access treatment and others are able to access the newest technology available. Yet this binary relationship to treatment that defines how our lives are lived and how memory is then made doesn’t mean better care for the patient..The story of Rosemary Kennedy is one that cannot be told without mentioning her lobotomy. Her memory is defined by a medical procedure that stripped her of autonomy and agency. A procedure that was introduced as a humane way to treat mentally ill people became one of medicine’s greatest horrors. Kennedy’s lobotomy did not happen once, but continues to happen every time her story is told. Her treatment and medical identity are her defining features. The perpetuation of this cycle relates to the spectacle surrounding psychiatric care and the people who receive it. The treatments are spectacular in nature so the subject then becomes part of the spectacle as well. Individuals are reduced to bullet points in the telling of larger medical histories and ethics, with the violence committed against them numbed by temporal distance and academic theory.

I got a piece into the 2023 Frank Bryant Art Exhibit being held at the UT Health Briscoe Library with the theme of "Medical Equity". It's been a while since I've posted anything so this is probably a nice way to let everyone know I'm still alive. FROM THE STATEMENT OF TICKET TO RIDE I This piece focuses on what is not allowed to be said when meeting with medical professionals and their ability to remove agency from an individual. It is a reflection of both the language the individual must learn when speaking to a medical professional and the mechanisms that medical professionals can willingly engage to disengage from the individual. In the work I use words and phrases that would force a medical professional to decide if the person was deserving of their care or deserving of being placed within either the institutions of the hospital or the prison system. This engages with Foucault's concept of bottom-up governance as it is the medical professional, not the institutions, that decides whether a person deserves to keep agency. It also functions to ask what art is to medical professionals and if they themselves have a limit for what they can ethically accept. They are deciding if this is art or not at the most basic concept. This piece is presented as multiple “tickets” that are to be presented to a medical professional so that the individual might experience the dehumanizing process of being committed to an institution and the ease with which that can happen. The tickets cut out the middleman and directly engage the mechanisms of dehumanization. The inconspicuous nature of the piece’s placement in the public sphere allows for an absurd, jarring, and humorous encounter. This is compounded through the content of the piece, its banal presentation, and serious consequences. Finally, this action is also intended to ask the medical professional if institutionalization is the best way to address the individual’s situation.

One of the crazier parts of this trip is finding out about my paternal grandmother's family and their deep roots in NC. This is the family house. I have a ton more to say about it, but we'll save that for another time.

The biggest of ups to @inigo_glassgallery for having a stellar showcase yesterday and to all of my dear friends I got to see again. Life sure is wild sometimes but never more than you can handle if you have the nicest people on the planet around you. I was gifted this beautiful @scottlocke.art collage and it's not only aesthetically and compositionally meaningful, but sentimental as well. This is the start of something new and better. I LOVE MY FRIENDS SO MUCH.

They put the chihuly next to the blankets and as far away from the cast glass exhibit as possible. Solid choice imo.

@gemini_artglass @gemini_artglass @gemini_artglass thanks to my man @roknowsglass for one of the most meaningful pieces of glass I’ve ever had. I love this image so much (sorry Ro I just had to pop it out of the watch for a sec) This weekend was a whirlwind and made me realize how rewarding it is to listen deeply and how much further I need to go to let the people I care about know that I do. @bishop3333 was an absolute joy conversing with and maybe might make me pause to enjoy the tea I drink a little bit longer. @truchalkglass @vinhwinh it was so great seeing y’all again and I’m glad yall are doing well. @dirgeglass wish I could’ve chatted longer but I’m going to do my part to put work in that chip stack I promise you! Man art is fucking cool isn’t it!!!!!!!
