Truth Bachman had no idea how big a part of their life running would become.
They got back into the sport as an adult with the goal of running the NYC Half, and maybe a marathon once in their life. Now, they’re training for their eighth and ninth marathons this coming spring, a journey that’s seen them complete four World Marathon Majors so far, cut their PR down to 2:56 and grow into a leader within @frontrunnersny .
Running has even started to seep into Truth’s writing as a playwright and composer, in the form of an upcoming piece that they say is ‘directly related to the trans athlete question.’ They add that this is the first time they’re incorporating their ‘literal life experience’ in that work, but it’s just the latest example of what’s now been years of Truth using their passions to help advocate for the trans, non-binary and genderqueer community.
We spoke with Truth to discuss their running origins and how their relationship with the sport changed as an adult, the road to a sub-3 marathon, their role as Front Runners’ Trans and Non-binary Director at Large, the future of trans athletes in running and more. Marathon 10 - BOSTON. tapped me into something divine. Some witchy-ass queer Strength. The love pouring from the crowd and you, my friends carries me through this insane journey, up hills, over the last mile in a full sprint.
I feel gratitude pounding in my chest for my body that competes and runs and writes and makes beautiful music. It gets stronger and more wise with time. It heals after injury like witchcraft and proves that consistency, care, and belief in my own power are real magic.
I don’t know why I was picked for this. When silence and hiding is easier and safer. But hear you all screaming my name and it makes me realize our collective strength will move mountains. We may just be lucky enough to have a shot at living our dream and seeing a better day.

Hearing Raúl sing my music in a studio on 42nd street reminded me why I moved to New York City all those years ago. And to get to that room on my own terms, with my own voice at the root of it, advocating for a better future, is the real win.
