It was really refreshing to step out of the environmental bubble and see how organisers, brands and participants are thinking about the future of running.
Some key takeaways:
1. Storytelling really is everything:
Although we say this all the time in the environment space (the word has honestly lost its meaning to me at this point), the conference made it clear that this isn’t just an ‘eco thing’ - it’s important across all industries.
At Trees Not Tees, we are lucky that we already have a powerful story to tell, and it’s one that does double the good: reducing waste AND restoring nature. We just need to make sure we’re sharing it more.
2. Women and Gen Z are driving growth:
It’s fantastic to see women claiming more space in sports and shaping the running community. On top of that, we know girls tend to care more about the planet, and Gen Z is highly political and clued up. It’s clear we have a real opportunity to connect with the next generation of runners and make sustainability part of the conversation 🌱
3. ESPR = a step closer to a circular economy:
The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is going to make brands more accountable for unsold shoes and clothing, and will hopefully be a game-changer in the fight against fast fashion 🤞 If you’ve ever seen footage of the beaches in Accra, Ghana, you’ll know why this matters.
