Today, Tree Pittsburgh had the honor of hosting USDA @u.s.forestservice Chief Randy Moore and @padcnr Secretary Cindy Dunn at our campus on the Allegheny River. Chief Moore and Secretary Dunn took a tour of our Heritage Nursery and heard directly from partners invested in our tree canopy before speaking to a crowd about the importance of the urban forest and the work we’re doing here in Pittsburgh.  This day wasn’t just about us - it’s celebrating the collective $9 million invested in our region from the Bipartisan Infrastucture Law and Inflation Reduction Act. This is a huge investment in #FundingUrbanForestry and we couldn’t be prouder to partner with Pittsburgh Canopy Alliance members @alleghenygoatscape @pittsburghparks @alleghenylandtrust @friendsoftheriverfront @accd_pa @waterlandlife @landforcepgh @beurbankind and @city_pittsburgh in this exciting effort! #urbanforestry #usforestservice #treenursery #pittsburgh

Happy National Love a Tree Day! This year, we asked staff to tell us why they love trees using just 5 words. Plus one haiku. What 5 words would you use to describe why you love trees? #nationalloveatreeday #lovetrees #pittsburgh #pittsburghtrees

We're continuing our Flashback Friday series to look at tree planting and care in 2025! Last year, we planted 1,900 trees throughout Allegheny County! This includes large balled & burlapped (b&b) trees and reforestation trees grown at our Heritage Nursery in Lawrenceville. Planting trees is great, but we know that tree care and maintenance are important to ensure that our urban forest continues to grow. We pruned 1,013 trees and weeded & mulched 1,251 in 2025! Need a summer camp for a budding nature lover? Our STEAM Outside Camp may be the perfect fit for your rising 4th through 6th graders! Our riverside campus is a living classroom with wooded trails, meadows, and a tree farm ready for learning and exploration! We will take your kiddos on a journey through tree time, learning about caring for trees at all stages – from seed to sapling to old age. There'll also be tree art, games, fun (sometimes messy!) science, and paddle-boarding on the Allegheny River. Camp is the week of July 20 and goes from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily. Full info and sign-ups are here: https://loom.ly/8-GPzh0

Last week, volunteers from @lifeatsmithnephew joined us in Highland Park to plant 100 restoration trees! The trees were planted along the Dog Paw Trail (also known to some as the Zoo Trail), which leads from the intersection of Butler Street & One Wild Place to the dog park. This planting is just one of many that will take place over several years to reforest an area where trees needed to be cut down for water main work. Take a peek at the trees as you drive over the Highland Park bridge from 28 to Butler Street (but be careful behind the wheel)! We're so grateful for partnerships like this one, with groups that return year after year. Want to get involved? Head to treepittsburgh.org/volunteer to learn how your group can get the hands dirty with Tree Pittsburgh.

Spring storms are here! Are you prepared? When spring storms roll through, the biggest threat to your power isn’t just rain, it’s wind. Pruning and removing trees, shrubs, and brush that grow too close to power lines is one of the most effective ways to reduce storm-related outages. A storm-focused approach to vegetation management is key to keeping the public and utility crews safe. Visit pittsburghearthday.org/proactive-tree-management-matters-when-storms-hit/ to learn more.

Don’t let a little rain scare you away! We still have a great selection of trees and shrubs available for purchase at May Market. And don’t forget to bring your questions to our Ask an Arborist booth! Tip: any photos you can bring of your trees or your space will help the arborists answer your question 👍 🌳 Come see us from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.!

Ever wonder what makes an arboretum so special? It's a living museum – a place to learn, connect, and inspire. And Tree Pittsburgh’s riverside campus has been officially recognized as one! 🌳 Come celebrate with us on May 16 for Sapling Saturday: Arboretum Explorers. Our campus will be open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for hands-on discovery. Our planned activities will be perfect for budding nature lovers from grades K through 5. From seed-starting and sign-painting to mulch-making and tree-sizing, there are plenty of activity stations for your kiddos to explore at their own pace. 👟 Remember: Our trails can be steep and narrow, so in order to join in the fun, closed-toe shoes are required. You'll find more information and registration here: treepittsburgh.org/arboretum-explorers

Is Flashback Friday still a thing? We're making it happen anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Join us every Friday in May to look back at some of our stats from 2025! Last year was a banner year for volunteers. From tree planting and tree care to supporting the Heritage Nursery and distributing trees at Tree Adoption events, volunteers showed up across every part of our work. We saw meaningful increases in both volunteer participation and total hours, reflecting a growing community commitment to caring for Pittsburgh’s urban forest. Tree Tenders stepped up in especially powerful ways, rising to the challenge of 1,000 volunteer hours and surpassing it with more than 1,500 hours of service. Thank you to every volunteer who helped us grow the urban forest in 2025! Read more about our 2025 at treepittsburgh.org/about (link in bio)
