Friends of the Riverfront and @alleghenycw partnered together on a youth educational outreach program - Roots & Rivers!
Our first session was a whopping success at West Mifflin High School last Thursday and Friday. Students appreciated getting out of the classroom to touch grass and ride the waves. 😎
They learned about the history of our rivers, the challenges they face, and the importance of land stewardship. Swaths of invasive plants were no match for the students as they ripped them out root and all, and Mr. Ben of ACW dropped some river lore on a breezy boat ride. ⚓️
A huge thanks to the students and teachers who helped us both in the classroom and on the Trail! And a huge thank you to the Grable Foundation for funding this program.
We are so excited to keep this program rolling and continue educating students about the environment, stewardship, and careers in these fields!

Kelsey Ripper, our Executive Director, will be speaking at a panel with @pittsburghtomorrow on Wednesday, May 13 from 5 - 8 pm, titled “Black, Gold, and Green.” This panel will be a discussion amongst local leaders in conservation about the importance of preserving this area's natural surroundings.
Kelsey brings a diverse background - working in New York City as a nonprofit manager and then as a nonprofit and economic development attorney before coming to Friends. She served on the board and was a volunteer at Friends before becoming the Executive Director. Kelsey has a J.D. from Fordham Law School and a B.A. in Environmental Studies and American Studies from Fordham University. She is a Commissioner on the Clean Pittsburgh Commission, serves on the Boards of the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy and the Pittsburgh Safe Boating Council, and served on Mayor Gainey’s Infrastructure and the Environment Transition Committee. She was also selected as one of @pittsburghmagazine 's 40 under 40 honorees in 2025! She is an active user of the trails, rivers, and recreational assets here in Pittsburgh.

👏👏 UpKeep gets the job done!
@alleghenycw and @friendsoftheriverfront joined forces for an UpKeep Trail Care Friday along the Monongahela Wharf. Dedicated volunteers and Riverlife staffers also took the boat shuttle to the Mon Wharf. Together, this group cleaned a big patch of riverfront in just two hours.
Maintenance matters. Thanks to our #UpKeep partners for working hard day after day to clean and beautify #Pittsburgh's riverfronts.

60 native trees and shrubs planted, 34 planters filled with flowers, and 1,058 pounds of litter removed with @alleghenycw , @steelers , and NFL Green! 🌱
Thank you to everyone who came out to McKees Rocks last Tuesday for the cleanup and tree planting event ahead of the NFL Draft that took place this past weekend. Our cleanups don't stop because the Draft is over - we have trail care events weekly throughout our season! You can find all of events on our website event calendar. But we can't promise that Steely McBeam will be at any more this season... 😉
