After the devastating July 4, 2025 flood, recovery has meant grieving loved ones, standing with neighbors, and rebuilding with care.
TreeFolks efforts will be beyond just planting trees: we will monitor and assess their development, assuring these new trees strengthen the land.
Prior field studies by the Reforestation team have reported approximately 67% tree survival for trees planted with Groasis Waterboxxes. The team will apply this same technology and planting techniques to our reforestation work in flood affected areas during the coming seasons, ensuring that each tree planted can help restore resilient ecologies and heal the communities we cherish and care for.

It's been a busy couple of weeks at the nursery as we prepare saplings for fall planting. Thanks to the Charles Schwab team for giving us a hand with watering, sifting and mixing soil, and packing it into tubes for seeding! We're excited for this batch of young trees to make their way into our urban forest next season 🌱🌳
Join us for a a nursery workday this month on Wednesday, May 27th from 9am-12pm!

Texas persimmon (Diospyros texana) photographed two months apart near Barton Creek, March & May 2026
The benefit of observing trees in our local urban forest is that we can track bloom and fruit times for foraging and seed collection. Sometimes called Mexican persimmon or black persimmon, the fruit of this shrubby tree turns a deep black once ripe (see photos 3 and 4), and has a rich sweetness unlike anything else. Its fruit is also used as a dye, and its hardy wood is favored for a wide range of applications.
The fruit can be harvested from late summer into early fall. Local wildlife enjoy feeding on its fruit too, so make sure to leave some behind for our wild neighbors! 🐗

When the July 2025 floods moved through Central Texas, they changed more than the land. Human loss was heartfelt around the nation, changing families forever, while communities carried overwhelming sorrows.
The floods also washed away trees that had shaded homes, held streambanks together, and helped define the places people know by heart.
💧 After a disaster, recovery takes time. TreeFolks is partnering with Hill Country Alliance to begin restoring those flood-damaged areas along Sandy Creek, Cow Creek, and the San Gabriel River, with native trees and long-term support.
🦎 These restored areas do important work over time. Trees along creeks and rivers help stabilize soil, reduce erosion, improve water quality, and create habitat for wildlife. They also help communities protect the natural systems that support them.

We recently had the honor of returning to Community First! Village to plant 50 native trees. This added to the hundreds of trees TreeFolks has planted at CF!V in the past, all of which provide shade, wildlife habitat, and even food. ⠀
⠀
With recent development taking place beside the expanding Community First! Village property, these trees will serve as a natural barrier against noise and provide privacy. Sarah Flaherty, a staff member at Community First! Village, emphasized the significance of this contribution to the residents, noting that for those who have lived in unsafe conditions for years, privacy and safety are paramount.⠀
⠀
The planting event was sponsored by corporate partners @epicor , @arm , and longtime supporters of TreeFolks and Community First! Village, Tim and Martha O'Connell. ⠀

Thank you to the volunteers and sponsors for supported this project!
Still buzzing from this year's picnic! We had so much fun putting on the biggest celebration of native trees in Central Texas for you all 🥲

Bird-friendly Plant Spotlight: Ashe Juniper
While they may contribute to your seasonal cedar fever, Ashe Juniper trees are an integral part of the Central Texas landscape. Not only do they provide dense thickets that birds use for shelter, but the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler requires its bark for nest-building material. Additionally, its blue-green berries are a wintertime favorite for fruit-eating birds.
Learn more about gardening with plants for birds + register for the free June 27 workshop on Ashe Junipers hosted by @treefolks at the link in our bio.
We got our hands a little dirty last week 🌱
Our team spent time at the @treefolks nursery sorting seeds, cleaning, mixing, and planting—doing our small part to help something bigger grow.
We’re also excited to share that we’re officially partnering with @treefolks as sponsors 🌳
They’re planting over 65,000 trees in Central Texas this year to improve air quality, cool our neighborhoods, and strengthen our community.
Small actions lead to real impact, and we’re glad to be in it together.
