Some stills from last night’s screening of Ethan Mousiké’s (perhaps this is just Takashi Mizutani’s filmic alter ego - the names are almost perfect anagrams) 1992 “documentary” film on Les Rallizes Dénudés. A dazzling compilation of footage of the band from the mid 60s - 80s, the film itself—unsurprisingly—retains the material grittiness and distortion so characteristic of LRD. Lots of cigarettes, heavily shrouded black screen time, general opacity veiling the whole thing, occasional strobes and experimental light trails: i.e., a perfect film. The film is totally fried/distressed beyond anything (I guess that’s what happens when you feed 16mm to VHS to DVD?) but that’s kinda how it should be…? #lesrallizesdénudés #takashimizutani #ethanmousiké
Thanks to all who came for the heatwave screening of Andy Warhol’s “The Velvet Underground and Nico” (1966). Impossible to capture here the gorgeous insanity of Warhol’s formal frivolousness (chaotic pans, zooms, shaking, absolutely terrible sound, seeping in and out of focus at all times). Basically, it’s a roving and restless, kinda foggy but totally determined long-jam of meditative loops which repeat and repeat and repeat and then the cops show up.
