Yoda. We let go of our first baby today. She was 13, just a few days shy of her 14th birthday. Almost as long as we’ve stayed in this city. She’s watched us grow, seen us at all stages of our Bombay lives, from our tiny flat in Sameer to where she lived last - staring out of a pretty balcony along with her two brothers Goya and Comet. I’ve been at the receiving end of her sass, her naughtiness, her anger, her deep, deep love and grace for my absence in her life. I always imagined her to be a bit like Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager from Downton Abbey. If she could speak our language, it would be dripping with equal amounts of disdain and begrudging affection. She’s had her fair share of adventures - jumping from the 3rd floor of a building, being rescued from the parapet of the neighbour’s 4th floor window, and of course now, the gnarliest one of them all, cancer. She survived two surgeries and thrived for a good while. But her little body could no longer keep up with her tremendous grit and will to live. She’d simply run out of her nine lives. Letting go of such an old friend, your little baby, is a pain you can’t prepare yourself enough for. We hope wherever she is, she’s happy, pain free, and sassy as always.
