Those dark sounds are the mystery, the roots that cling to the mire that we all know, that we all ignore, but from which comes the very substance of art. ‘Dark sounds’ said the man of the Spanish people, agreeing with Goethe, who in speaking of Paganini hit on a definition of the duende: ‘A mysterious force that everyone feels and no philosopher has explained.’
So, then, the duende is a force not a labour, a struggle not a thought. I heard an old maestro of the guitar say: ‘The duende is not in the throat: the duende surges up, inside, from the soles of the feet.’ Meaning, it’s not a question of skill, but of a style that’s truly alive: meaning, it’s in the veins: meaning, it’s of the most ancient culture of immediate creation.
This ‘mysterious force that everyone feels and no philosopher has explained’ is, in sum, the spirit of the earth, the same duende that scorched Nietzche’s heart as he searched for its outer form on the Rialto Bridge and in Bizet’s music, without finding it, and without seeing that the duende he pursued had leapt from the Greek mysteries to the dancers of Cadiz and the headless Dionysiac scream of Silverio’s siguiriya.

Sound by @xu_jared
Sonidos ligados a otras dimensiones.
Otro planeta.
Trajimos "Borboleta do Cèu e da Terra" a Want to Dance Festival el pasado 18 de Abril.
Xièxiè @shinehousetw for the invitation
In between up and down. Deep down, reaching far out. Mixing, crossing, disappearing.
Tonight we continue invoking, giving ourselves to what is beyond, opening doors. At Revolver.

"Borboleta do Cèu e da Terra" will be part of Want to Dance Festival in Taipei @shinehousetw@xu_jared and myself will be performing in Wan Theatre on April 18th
For over a year now, we have been exploring with the crossing of dark sounds and deep roots. This piece was created here in Taipei. The experimental art scene from Taipei highly inspired me during the residency time where Borboleta was created. Jared felt the call to cross to the edge of Europe and visit Andalucia, where flamenco emanates from every corner.
Borboleta do Céu e da Terra is a question in the form of dance about the identity of the Andalusian body. An inquiry into a dance without labels, descending into depth and the guts. A search for "el duende". A tribute to the grandmothers.
Butoh and Flamenco with experimental noise music.
A Butoh that travels to and from Asia.
A Flamenco that journeys to and from Spain.
Neither Butoh nor Flamenco, but a dance that seeks to liberate and move beyond any form.

Obscure Pulsations
After sunset, frequencies from the deep begin to emerge.
Breathing, lurking, and resonating in the dark.
Legendary American duo Wrekmeister Harmonies materialize as shapeshifters of dark sound, casting sprawling, shadow-like soundscapes that unfold into a vast auditory labyrinth. Europe-based Taipei sound artist ChiaChun Xu’s no-input feedback noise enters into a charged encounter with the raw physicality of Spanish dancer Vir Torres’s Butoh, searching for a primordial pulse between distortion and breath. Meanwhile, Hsinchu-based Spanish duo Torcal work through the accumulation and erosion of electronics and guitar, sculpting sound across time into a colossal, slowly shifting sonic mass.
On this night where sound and body intertwine, vibrations quietly spread through the air and across the ground. Like a pulse lurking deep within the dark, the sound continually morphs between formation and dissipation, gradually approaching the edges of distortion.
