Is the fish fillet an example of Danish cultural heritage? 
It might sound odd — but maybe not so far-fetched. UNESCO encourages countries to nominate foods, rituals, and traditions as part of their intangible cultural heritage. Recently, Denmark held a public vote to decide what best represents its culture. Fish fillet wasn’t on the list. But should it have been? In Kompleks Form no. 1, artist Torben Ribe transforms an everyday fish fillet into a monumental sculpture.
Installed on a wall in Aabenraa, it’s a hand-painted, hyperrealistic cast based on a 3D scan of the real thing. The work sparked plenty of debate when it was first unveiled — just like heritage lists and cultural canons often do. It shows that art and culture are about what moves people and gets them talking. 🎣 A humorous, absurd — yet strangely beautiful — tribute to daily life, public space, and Denmark’s love of fish.
Maybe it belongs on the heritage list after all.
