FAULTY COGNITIONS My solo exhibition opens Thursday, 30 April at PIERMARQ*. "Each wall-based sculpture acts as a metaphor for what Ferson has attempted to accomplish through his artmaking, obtusely pointing towards the universal desire to be seen and understood as an artist. Pyrrhic Victory is hung on its side off of the wall, hinting at the nature of success and at what cost it might be achieved. Stay emerges in bold red text, like a request or warning sign to hold time or attention. Collectively, they experiment with combinations of different materials and cultural contexts, borrowing from the bold elegance of times past and subverting them into the present." I photographed a wonderful exhibition at Piermarq Gallery this week. ‘Faulty Cognitions’ by Sydney-based artist Tom Ferson Draws on the visual language of signage and is informed by his training in art therapy. Tom is the first recipient of an Art Incubator grant for 2026, and this exhibition shows that grant bearing fruit! The show is a quirky, masterful display of integrating the conceptual with a floor-less understanding of colour, materiality and form. At a formal level Tom has constructed a series of relief sculptures of great variety; materials range from neon signage, pebble-crete, fibreglass and a heathy amount of glitter thrown in for good measure. This spot is walkable from my home so I get to see how different it looks day to day and season to season. After a downpour the water goes a flat murky olive green. Sometimes is has a misty blue glow when the light hits it just right. The day I painted it, a blanket of yellow and orange leaves sat on the surface and slowly rippled out towards me. It's only just off a path through the bush but I had it to myself for the hours I sat there. 😌 . Vance Oils on mounted aluminium composite panel  100cm x 130cm 2025 . This one is a commission from last year I'm particularly proud of. The work involved a photoshoot with Vance, but none of the other elements were present during the shoot and are the result of digitally manipulating imagery and working with paint to set them all in the same environment. The viewing angle was also shifted to make Vance look properly seated in that chair.
