Sophie Lampert’s solo exhibition ‘A Speck in the Ellipsis‘ continues at CBD Gallery until 9 May.
Listen the Trees Are Whispering (2022) appraises the legacy of Francesca Caccini, an Italian composer and singer who was widely celebrated during her lifetime as the highest‑paid musician of the early Baroque era. Despite this acclaim, her contribution has largely faded from mainstream musical histories. Sophie Lampert reasserts Caccini as a central figure, drawing on La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina—the first opera known to have been composed by a woman.
The work is structured in two interconnected parts. The lower section of the sculpture evokes oak leaves, symbolising longevity and endurance. Rising from this foundation, the main body allegorically imagines metamorphosis, referencing Caccini’s Chorus of Enchanted Plants. In the opera, the sorceress Alcina transforms her discarded lovers into plants and trees, a spell that is ultimately broken by the sorceress Melissa, who restores the enchanted vegetation to human form.
