Super excited to announce the third and final act @oldsun_newmoon , part of our long-anticipated Indie Folk Night @communeliverpool Joining us beforehand in the day at our Ambient Meditation alongside J. Conley, @black_brxnswicker will be performing twice on the 28th of September, performing alongside the very talented @tom.welsh performing as their band Old Sun, New Moon. ‘The duo combine Tom’s introspective northern songwriting and Etta’s midwestern experimental ambient guitar mastery (showcased as solo project Black Brunswicker). Catch the duo performing between 10-11pm on Sunday 28th of September @communeliverpool Expect a potential surprise @black_brxnswicker ambient folk outro set at our Indie Folk Night, to help calmly and blissfully close the evening. Two singles out today 😎 No build up to these, but that doesn't reflect how proud I am of these two tunes and what @joelharries72 has helped make them into. These were both written a couple of years ago, maybe more - before the last two I put out - and they were two not to be rushed, cos they both did that thing of jolting me when I wrote them cos of what lyrics came out, and what they spoke of. Music always tells me more than I think I know about myself, and if you too ever find yourself randomly musing something like 'when they roll my stone away, I'd hope they see I was loved', I hope you too follow that thread as to why that would be what your subconscious throws out there 🙃 These may be the last of the 'Tom Welsh' songs, partly because it seems a good fitting end, partly because it feels strange to have my name attached to stuff I'm never doing alone, and partly cos some of the catalogue speaks of a different time/me. No bad thing, but I feel I need that separation, which probably either sounds pretentious or understandable, depending on how/how well you know me. I'll be putting more stuff out under a 'revolving band' name at some point to reflect the way I work/want to do things, plus a lot of the focus is @oldsun_newmoon , so please keep your eyes and ears peeled there 👀 There's a few old tunes I might release as 'Tom Welsh' if I can do them justice, but my writing efforts are elsewhere onwards. New @oldsun_newmoon release 😎 Lay Your Burden Down was the first song we played together and is really the essence of what Old Sun, New Moon is. The original idea for me was to take these simple bits of songs and not overthink them at all, just kind of make them meditations on themselves, or at least meditations on whatever came to mind, and let @black_brxnswicker elevate them however they saw fit. It's good to see where a song goes or – as is the case with this one really – doesn't go: sometimes the core of what it started as is enough if you've said all you've felt the need to say within the song. Lyrically it's a bit of a love letter to the sense of belonging I felt from others when I needed it most, and that I continue to, so it'll always be a favourite of mine. I kind of see it as the marker between the past and all the good that has come since that I may never have found. This was the first song we played live together, and @emilymercermusic joined us then so it's only right that she's on the final version, and even introduces it. This was also the first Old Sun, New Moon song recorded – it's the guitar and vocals from that first session with @kevinfoyproducer that was originally done just to send demos to Ethan and see how we'd work together. It felt right to use that recording from a time we'd only even met once or twice as an artefact of new beginnings. And things get better when you find where you belong... 🌕

The tunes are out! After an exhaustive social media campaign, It's a Beautiful Thing and (what's meant to seem like an old-fashioned b-side) Sweeter Sound are out in the world. I would genuinely love everyone reading this to go and listen, and continue to over time, but also I must say that the songs have already served an invaluable purpose in that I got to: buzz off writing them and then recording them while they're fresh; go into the studio and spend time with a great guy and incredible musician and producer in @joelharries72 ; have the excitement of getting mixes back with new parts by Joel and then some mega masters by @kevinfoyproducer ; hear kind words about what I do by people who mean a lot to me; get creative using a great picture with great memories, taken by @grunbein ; and have artefacts forever of all these things in the form of two songs that didn't exist a few months ago and that I think came out great, personally. And now you'll probably only hear from me again at the end of another process like this that I'll have loved every minute of. It's all in the journey, and that's a beautiful thing 😎

This is a picture from a rooftop in Chicago in October 2022 the morning after I'd had the honour of attending (and playing at) the wedding of my @oldsun_newmoon partner Ethan @black_brxnswicker and their real life partner Mimi @travelstudies , and it was taken by Ethan's cool as sister @grunbein . That trip and the people that made it what it was meant a lot to me, and I kept thinking then how it all came from music. Without music I wouldn't know all these great people or get these opportunities or experiences. And I still keep thinking how much good comes from music, and how I'm so lucky to have it as an emotional outlet, and how I'm so unbelievably grateful for the friends I've made through it. And those feelings came out when I recently wrote a couple of tunes to work on solo stuff with @joelharries72 , and that's what you'll hear if you listen when they come out on Friday. Or whenever you get around to it. It truly is a beautiful thing, and there really is no sweeter sound 😎
