Niko coming to Savannah to document the process of the large work while the @spoof.project show in New York show is on through May 24—contact @spoof.a for details. I had been concerned about carving with a photographer present, but it brought out a focus on gesture. Gesture is life. The mark of the power chisel, the reveal of the granite matrix under the stonebuster hammers. It was a great 3 days of carving with Niko. Dishing out the back, re-roughing the base entirely.

There were so many things to be thankful about last year: one was showing this work in the outdoor sculpture exhibition at @motherinlawsart outdoor space upstate New York, in the show Muskeg curated by @fieldprojects . To show this piece in this place required that I build a plinth from the local stones. Getting to know the local personality of stone is such a good thing to incorporate into the art. It joins the work to the way people have historically made fieldstone structures in that locale. Much thanks again to Jacob and Jessica for the opportunity and Faisel for helping transport the stones once we found them.
I made this 5 ton-capable rotating platform to be able to easily understand the full form of larger pieces. You must be able to see your work! It's my own design and I'm happy to let anyone know how to make one. One important note about the design came from seeing a smaller stand when visiting the studio of @jeromebmeadows.artist : the casters are facing upwards. This is important because, when you make chips, they don't stop the wheels. Thanks Jerome!

Happy New Year! The year of the fire horse is coming. It’s supposed to have a lot of energy for change. Doesn’t that sound good? Making a sculpture to burn has become a tradition for me. Working hard with speed for a couple days then ritualistically incinerating the object of one’s focus among a happy crowd. It feels good. It’s like making a big meal. #firesculpture #firehorse
Much thanks to @fieldprojects and @motherinlawsart for the great upstate outdoor sculpture show 'Muskeg' this summer. Upstate Art Week is becoming so huge and there are so many venues displaying work outside of the white box context. It's a pretty remarkable growing scene for outdoor work.
