Afgelopen donderdag was de feestelijke opening van Nieuwelingen: In Transit. In deze eclectische groepstentoonstelling onderzoeken 15 kunstenaars de betekenis van de auto voor hun generatie. De werken tonen hoe dit voertuig thema’s als de woningcrisis, innovatie en escapisme beïnvloed en verbindt.

OPEN DAY SATURDAY 15 NOV. 12:00-16:00 * Over the next month Maja Wachowska’s harvest wreaths will be on view and we invite you to try them on during the open day. These wreaths, which can also be seen as crowns, combine an old Polish harvest tradition and Maja’s design practice, in which she uses metalworking as a tool to empower women.
Traditionally the metal frames are constructed by men, while women collectively assemble the large wreaths during competitions. In this case, the steel bases were made by Maja and the wreaths were collaboratively created in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. While traditional harvest crowns often resemble Christian symbols or royal regalia, the artist reimagines them as symbols of women, honoring their often unseen labor. The crowns are woven in a braid-like pattern and tied under the chin, resembling a headscarf.
These interactive sculptures are crafted from hand-picked grasses, collected by the artist. Each different type of grass, all from the Dutch countryside, had to be harvested in a different season. Through this work, Maja Wachowska, places elements from traditional harvest in a new context, within Amsterdam Nieuw-West, and beyond old fashioned gender roles. From the patient labor of waiting for crops to grow and harvesting them at the right time, to the communal act of working and celebrating the harvest together, each stage of her process reflects a different phase of the harvest cycle.

"TIED UNDER A CHIN" De komende maand zijn de oogstkransen van @maja.wachowski te zien. We nodigen je uit om ze zelf te passen, tijdens de open dag op zaterdag 15 november. Deze kransen, die ook als kronen kunnen worden gezien, combineren een oude Poolse oogsttraditie met Maja’s ontwerppraktijk in, waar zij metaalbewerking inzet als
middel om vrouwen in hun kracht te zetten.
Traditioneel worden de metalen frames door mannen gemaakt, terwijl vrouwen gezamenlijk de grote kransen samenstellen tijdens competities. In dit geval is het frame door Maja zelf gemaakt, en zijn de kransen daar bovenop collectief gemaakt in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
Waar oogstkronen vaak doen denken aan christelijke symbolen of koninklijke regalia, herinterpreteert de kunstenaar ze als eerbetoon aan vrouwen en hun vaak onzichtbare arbeid. De kransen zijn gewoven als vlechten
en worden onder de kin vastgebonden, zoals vrouwen
in Polen hun hoofddoek dragen.
Deze interactieve sculpturen zijn samengesteld met handgeplukte grassen, allemaal door de kunstenaar zelf verzameld. Elke grassoort, afkomstig van het Nederlandse platteland, moest ieder in een ander seizoen geoogst worden.
Met dit werk plaatst Maja Wachowska elementen uit oogsttradities in een nieuwe context: in Amsterdam
Nieuw-West en los van ouderwetse genderrollen.
Van het geduldige werk van wachten op het rijpen van de gewassen om ze vervolgens op het juiste moment oogsten, tot het gezamenlijke werk en het vieren van de oogst:

Very proud to announce the launch of the second New Makership book Friday 11th 17:00 @buurtwerkplaats_noorderhof . It features 75 profiles of artists and an editorial part with essays, illustrations, interviews, photography and a comic strip that explore topics which are both relevant to the hyper local context of Amsterdam Nieuw-West as well as the (art-) world in general. This second book is the result of another year of monthly meetings, hosted by @amsterdam_nieuwwest , where a broad diversity of artists, designers, performers, researchers and other makers share opportunities, struggles, successes and experiences of makership.
