Last week the short documentary I edited, The Devil Is Busy, was nominated for an academy award. It’s been a bit surreal and I took the past week just wrapping my head around it and thinking about the journey the film has been on for the past year and a half. I’m incredibly honored to have had this opportunity; it’s been an incredible experience shepherding this film through 14 film festivals, national distribution, and an awards season gauntlet. I learned a lot. The best part was being able to meet so many incredible filmmakers and friends. It’s special to feel like you belong to a real community of artists who can respect and appreciate each other’s work. Thank you to everyone who has ever watched the film and to those who have supported me in this process. The experience of making a film is ephemeral, I like to think it’s important to stop and appreciate all of the memories, especially if you’re lucky enough to have had a journey like we have with this one. Eventually the roller coaster will come to an end, but the film will live on. Here are a few bits and bops I’ve compiled to remember this experience: 1. For your consideration. 2. I began editing this film in this spring of 2024. 3. A license plate I saw the week I started. Evergreen really. 4. Suntory time. 5. While editing this, my son celebrated his first birthday. 6. An excerpt from @nifmuhammad ’s There’s Always This Year which I was reading. 7-8. World premiere at the @neworleansfilmfestival in October 2024. 9. After our premiere, @cwdivadance and I got a drink back at her hotel, while at the bar we looked up and saw @soledadobrien discussing the film on TV. It felt like a good omen. 10-11. Next was @docnycfest , by this time @hbodocs had acquired the film, which felt like such a huge accomplishment. 12. An encouraging note from a special person, RIP. 13. I got to take the film to my home state and share it with my family. 14. Self explanatory. 15-16. Premiere day was special. 17. Making the @docnycfest shortlist. 18. Soledad and @amariroseleigh screening the film in London. 19. Shortlist screening at @dctvny . 20. It’s been a wild ride. ❤️

Back in New York with some film developed from the last week. I’m so proud of the incredible journey The Devil Is Busy was able to take and for all the support from our collaborators, friends and family. Particularly grateful for @hbodocs , @soledadobrien , @rose_marie_arce , @geetagandbhir , @ambermfares and @cwdivadance for trusting me with the edit. Can’t wait to be back.

Honored to share that The Devil Is Busy has won Best Documentary Short at RiverRun. Grateful to the jury for the recognition and to @riverrunfilm for allowing us to share this film at such a well curated and special festival. If you’re in Atlanta, the film screens at the @atlantafilmfestival this Friday night.

Last October I spent a day with @alexander23 at @electricladystudios while he was in between tour stops and recording a new song he had written. It was a privilege to get to witness such a talented and creative artist work their craft. He recorded something really special and beautiful and trusted me to document it and put this short piece together. He shares some really vulnerable and profound thoughts about what the song means to him and what it’s like to make a career for yourself in the industry today. While this started as a piece to show the process of making a song, I like to think it's also a piece about growing up and having to learn how to live the life you've worked so hard for. The video is out now on youtube and Alexander's IG, check it out. The piece was shot and directed by me.
