There’s something fascinating about how a story can revolve around murder and still feel deeply comforting.
This cozy mystery truly understands its genre: small-town setting, amateur sleuth energy, humor that softens tension, and a culinary metaphor that structures the entire investigation.
Maddie believes recipes are infallible — follow the steps, get the result. The novel cleverly mirrors that logic in the mystery itself. The “ingredients” (clues) are laid out carefully enough that, for the first time in a while, I guessed the killer before the reveal — and that felt incredibly satisfying as a reader.
As a translator, I kept thinking about the Cornish accent in the audiobook. How would that be transferred into Spanish without displacing the setting culturally? That would be an interesting challenge.
And yes — the bonus recipe at the end is the perfect cozy touch.

Este «cozy» honra completamente el género: crimen sin crudeza explícita, ambiente acogedor, humor, gatos adorables y una protagonista aficionada que intenta ordenar el caos de una muerte al igual que con una receta.
Logré adivinar al asesino antes de la revelación… y eso como lectora emociona muchísimo.
Y ahora no puedo dejar de pensar cómo se traduciría ese acento de Cornwall al español sin perder identidad cultural.
La verdad es que esa receta extra al final es el toque «cozy» perfecto.

It is full of adventure and there is plenty of fun however, it is also an extremely serious book in many ways. Lisa Thompson has a wonderful skill for addressing real life and difficult topics for children. This book addresses family separation, child mental health, adult mental health, bullying by children and adults as well as the general friendship strains of childhood.
