He mainly eats all the biscuits and keeps us all company, though he's very keen to get started with Guillaume's tools! Check out this varnish! We've lost track of time staring at this beautiful texture 👀 This 1936 violin was made by the Nice maker Pierre Gaggini, just two years after returning to his hometown from Paris. The model shows the influence of his uncle and teacher, Alberto Blanchi. Gaggini's prolific career was marked by numerous awards at international exhibitions. Delighted with this handsome Thomas Hardie, made in Edinburgh around 1850 🤩 Hardie (born 1803) carried on the legacy of his father, the great Matthew Hardie. He trained under Matthew and worked at his side until his father’s passing in 1826, when Thomas—just 23—took over a workshop weighed down by debt. Despite financial struggles, Thomas rose to become Edinburgh’s leading violin maker, much like his father before him. His work falls into two distinct periods: early instruments follow the long-pattern Stradivari model his father favored, while later he turned to the Guarneri ‘del Gesù’ model for inspiration. A look at Venice today 😍 The violin on the left was made by Luigi Fabris around 1860, and the one on the right is a Giulio Degani from around 1900. Fabris is a brilliant but relatively rare maker whose work spans the gap between the great classical makers of the city and the later explosion of production led by the Degani family. Interestingly, both violins owe their inspiration to a member of the Guarneri family: the Fabris is modelled after Guarneri 'del Gesù' and the Degani shows the influence of his brother, Pietro Guarneri of Venice. Just look at this beautiful Lockey Hill! It's been such a privilege to get to know this violin, and to broaden our understanding of the quality of his work. Like many of his contemporaries, Lockey Hill mainly produced instruments for the London trade: these were generally made pretty quickly and commercially. We don't mind admitting that it took a little while to be sure that the maker of those was the same as the maker of this little jewel! Sadly, despite being able to make instruments of this quality, Hill's economic situation meant that he took the risk of combining his career as a luthier with that of a horse thief 😬 His crimes caught up with him and he was hanged in 1796 - a sad ending for such a talented maker.
