Lesson for Essence by Wizkid and Tems 1st grade class. Fundraiser up! Link in bio
This is a great song for kids bc of its very easy (and beautiful) chord progression. Dmin7 e min7 (dfac, egbd). This same lesson works with any 2 3 progression as long as you transpose to C for the younger kids. Once they seem comfortable with the chords, they start practicing to a beat (thats where the video starts). To add another layer, I have them clap a syncopated comping part before practicing it on piano (some of them will be able to play this well, others wont, I always give them the option. I compare it to playing a video game, if you want a challenge, play it on hard, if you just want to have fun, play it on medium or easy. And students always have the option of modifying their part to make it easier if theyre feeling frustrated) Notice here the tempo is slower and im playing a DAW version of the song, which lets me change the tempo. After that, they're practicing to the daw and its off to the races. You might hear some dissonance and some mistakes when they play as a group. Instead of stopping to fix it, I often just keep going and students will often use their ear and my cues to fix it themselves. *Educators and parents, feel free to DM me of you have any questions about how tp make this work in your classroom or at home.
Rosa Parks by @outkast , gets more fun at 1:30
🚨⚠️Fundraiser alert! Link in bio. We are starting our fundraiser for our free summer camp. Our summer camp will be for 2 weeks and is free for students and families. Our students will be learning a bunch of new songs, recording music for our summer album (see links on bio if you didn't listen to the album from LAST summer), running around outside and relaxing. One of the great things about camp is that we have lots of time to learn and record so we never have to be in a rush to do anything. Its kind of like when you book too much studio time and aren't pressed to finish everything within a specific time frame. This gives the students lots of time to relax and play between learning and recording, which is the way it should be.

How i use APPLE LOGIC in my classroom. A few notes for context: before I start playing the track to a set tempo, I go through the chords very slowly with all the students. They have unplugged practice pianos at their desks, and before we start playing to a beat, ill shout out a chord one at a time at my piano and wait until most of the students find it before moving to the next chord. Also I introduce the song by playing the original track for them so they get an idea of what we're going for, and they'll stand around me at my piano so they can get a birds eye view of what the playing the chords will look like. Also, i share the chord names with them, (Gmin. Bbmajor etc) Once they understand how to play the progression, we'll attach the chord names from there and use them as we rehearse. Also i name the black keys as flats or sharps when able. With this song, the chords hit 2 times per bar, which makes saying "Bflat Eflat G go" alot harder to say in time and more confusing for the kids. Last thing, I make about 4 or 5 of these every week. It's not mixed, its not mastered, i didnt have time to pick perfect patches, the levels are right enough that they get an idea of how its supposed to sound and the overall vibe of the song. Video cuts off a bit early bc of time limits.
