TIME OFF is a dance party presented by Vacation Pay, a creative brand based out of Charlotte, NC. With a focus on release from the everyday woes and worries of life, our parties are a way for individuals of different backgrounds, cultures and identities to escape from reality as a community. @gum.mp3 is a multimedia artist from rural North Carolina, currently residing in Baltimore. He was a Leslie King-Hammond Graduate Fellow during the 2024-2025 academic year at Maryland Institute College of Art, and was awarded the Fred Lazarus Award for Social Change. As Bandcamp said so well, “[he’s] a self-described noise machine, digital pirate, and technomancer—embodies the spirit of Akomfrah’s Data Thief in both his music and his persona, acting as a connector for different elements of Black dance music history.” Resident Advisor named his album Black Life, Red Planet as one of the Best of 2024. I originally created Vacation Pay, and as an extension TIME OFF out of frustration. Even beyond my own personal need to express myself more in my hometown of Charlotte, I grew tired of seeing so many other talented DJs and creatives getting passed over. Parties doing the same lineups over and over again, a general lack of respect for the same talent that were making events happen, an overall fear of expanding and bringing other artists out to our city; the list goes on. I’ve always been a firm believer that you shouldn’t complain about a thing if you’re not willing to put the time and effort into fixing it. Running TIME OFF has been one of the more challenging endeavors I’ve thrown myself into, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I appreciate everyone who has ever taken the time out of their busy schedule to step outside of the mainstream. None of the gimmicks, just curation and a love for music. Next up for our TIME OFF 006 highlights, we have @alec_lomami of @novisaparty Raised in Kinshasa and based in North Carolina, artist , producer, label head and curator of the No Visa party and mix series, Alec Lomami is somewhat of a modern re- naissance man. His sets glides through the rich cultural conversations of the African diaspora, blended with the upfront club sounds of Congo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Angola South Africa sprinkled with some House, Techno and bass music. His expertise shines as he curates, books, and performs alongside renowned djs such as Bianca Oblivion, Nikki Nair, Kampire, Dj Lag making “NO VISA” a global dance party favorite from North Carolina to cities worldwide, including New York, New Orleans, and across Africa in Johannesburg, Abidjan, and Abuja. Alec’s talent extends to producing and rapping, with an exciting lineup of Dance EPs and singles slated for release this year. Beyond his DJ career, Alec is a skilled A&R executive and music consultant, recognized for elevating artists across various genres. His work has garnered attention from prestigious press outlets such as Fader, MTV, Elle, Vogue, OkayAfrica, and Rolling Stone South Africa, Les Inrocks highlighting his sig- nificant impact and solidifying his reputation as a global tastemaker. Up next for our TIME OFF 006 highlights is @timeoffparty founder @simonsmthng Simon SMTHNG is a DJ/Producer born in and based out of Charlotte, NC. After a childhood of playing numerous instruments, primarily the violin, his transition to DJing as a teenager became a new means of expression. Using his knowledge of music theory and classical composition, the budding composer began teaching himself music production using various DAWs and the occasional sampler. With almost two decades of experience, Simon has been involved in both hip-hop and electronic communities across the country, supporting and playing beside the likes of Shigeto, DJ PayPal, Stefan Ringer, STLNDRMS, and DJ Manny. Along with performing and producing, Simon hosts the dance party TIME OFF as a means of educating Charlotte’s growing music scene on DJs and genres of music newer to the region. With several new projects, sets, and collaborations on the horizon, Simon’s endeavors have yet to reach their peak. TIME OFF 006 is less than 2 weeks away! Her tastes in left-field dance music have been known to shake shit up on the dance floor. With a love of old school sound and upbeat tempos, she keeps the energy high and bodies pulsating. Up first for our TIME OFF 006 DJ highlight is none other than @queercodedclt founder @dj_extraa DJ Extraa is nothing but EXTRAA. Based in Charlotte, they are a DJ, visual artist, organizer and curator. Born and raised in Miami, as an artist they focus on the trailing edge of underground electronica twisting high energy techno, primal latin percussion, club heavy-hitters, and leftfield electronic music. No matter what setting, a DJ Extraa set is always going to be electrifying. They are the co-founder of the Charlotte Queer collective “QueerCoded” which focuses on highlighting queer dance music from all over the world through their parties. They have been building an incredible roster of performances supporting acts like Ninajirachi, Umru, UNIIQU3, Coffintexts, Rose Kourts, and most recently making their debut at the iconic Miami festival III Points.
