Thanks to all our wonderful clients in 2023! It's been a great year for us and we are truly grateful to have worked with so many great artists. And now for perhaps our biggest announcement to date. After many years of patience, perseverance, and hard work we are now back in the vinyl record master disc cutting game! For many reasons, it became our goal not to use a traditional vintage Neumann or Scully cutting system for this service. Instead we opted to be one of the first studios in the world to install a new cutting edge modern cutting lathe developed by @sillitoe_audio_technology in Australia. This new machine brings many exciting modern features not seen on vintage cutting lathes. Last month, we successfully cut masters on this machine for the world's first LP being pressed at @goldrushvinyl (more about this to come in a future post). We are very excited to be offering this service and look forward to being a cutting solution for artists, engineers, record labels, and pressing plants. If you are interested in cutting your next record with us, please visit /vinyl for more information. We look forward to hearing from you! . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylmastering #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #masteringengineer #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #analog #audiophile #audioporn #proaudio

After a long hiatus from social media, we're back with some exciting updates. Hundreds of hours of planning, purchasing, design and hard work over the course of a year went into our newest addition to the studio. Introducing the "MTC Advanced" master transfer console! Designed and built by owner Adrian Morgan and Wayne Kirkwood (KA Electronics), this device has some unique features and is optimized for analog transfers to vinyl. Floating mid-side processing, variable frequency eliptical EQ, high and low end filters for vinyl transfers, 15dB of variable I/O gain, flippable inserts, and extended mid-side controls (width and side tilt EQ), highest quality rotary switches and parts, external super low noise power supply, and the amazing THAT corporation line driver IC's. Internally there are over 3000 solder connections. We spent years frustrated by the overpriced off the shelf offerings out there and are very pleased to have finally arrived at this solution. If you've worked with us in the past 2 months, your music has been mastered through this device! . . . #masteringengineer #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #analog #vintageanalog #vinyl #vinylrecords #audiophile #audioporn #vinylmastering #proaudio #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #lathetrolls #studiodog #masteringconsole #console

Reflecting on the recent passing of @dangelo_music (RIP). By mid-1999, mastering engineer Tom Coyne was working on some of the most important mainstream hip-hop records of the era. I was lucky enough to be his assistant during that time. One rainy night in NYC, Tom sent me to Electric Lady Studios in a taxi to pick up some tapes. I had no idea they’d become the source for D’Angelo’s Voodoo. After mastering was finished, Tom went home and had me stay for the playback with the artists (as he often did). The first photo above (from an unrelated session) shows exactly how D’Angelo looked that night. After listening with D’Angelo and Russ Elevado, I said, “That was one of the best-sounding records I’ve ever heard come through here.” D’Angelo smiled softly and replied, “Really? Aww, thank you so much, man — that’s great to hear.” He was humble and mellow — the total opposite of the image that would later be marketed. I was amazed by his sincerity, especially after hearing the record took over three years to make. I told the team at Sterling, “This is one of the most important albums we’ll ever do.” At the time, the reaction was basically “just another session.” But in hindsight… we all know better now. Over the next few days, we assembled the digital masters for the LP in a tiny, windowless vinyl lathe room (second photo above) using an old Mac 68K running the now-forgotten Sonic Studio. Working with D’Angelo and Russ felt like collaborating with real musicians — down-to-earth, creative, and generous. They even had me create a hidden track on the CD using a stray Pro Tools rig. I believe it still plays after the last song on today’s streaming versions. By far, the most memorable session of my time at Sterling Sound. Thank you D’Angelo (and to to everyone else involved) — for the once-in-a-lifetime experience and timeless music. . . . #Dangelo #Voodoo #TomCoyne #SterlingSound #RussElevado #ElectricLadyStudios #NeoSoul #ClassicAlbums #BehindTheScenes #MasteringEngineer #MusicHistory

Making some nice progress on the Fairchild 523 mono lathe! Filling and sanding has been completed on the outside of the oak cabinet. Next steps will be restoring the inside, then on to the primer coat on the outside. Final color will be the original piano gloss black. . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylmastering #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #masteringengineer #fairchild #fairchild lathe #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #analog #audiophile #audioporn #proaudio

The time has come for the journey to begin! Our 1947 Fairchild 523-J1 disc mastering lathe will be undergoing a full restoration / modernization for it's eventual installion at @trestle_farm for live to disc recordings. This is the same lathe used by legendary recording and mastering engineer Rudy Van Gelder (@van_gelder_studio ) for some of the early Blue Note Records (@bluenoterecords ) catalog releases. Less than 15 of these machines in complete or nearly complete condition exist in the world today. First steps will be full restoration of it's heavy solid oak cabinet and cast aluminum deck plate. Much more to come stay tuned for updates! . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylmastering #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #masteringengineer #fairchild #fairchild lathe #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #audiophile #audioporn #proaudio

Upgraded the lathe microscope with a turrret (nosepiece) for 3 objective lenses. No more awkward fumbling around switching lenses for groove setup and final QC! A big time saver. . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylmastering #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #masteringengineer #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #analog #audiophile #audioporn #proaudio

Happy holidays to all of our wonderful clients who made 2024 a great year full of incredible music and tasty grooves! We were recently doing some maintenance on our Fairchild model 523 mono lathe and discovered this incredible mechanism inside of it's turntable drive box. Pictured here is precision friction ball-race transmission for switching turntable speeds. This box connects to a synchronous motor which together drive the turntable. Truly a marvel of 1940's post war era machining and inginuity. This ingenious clutch allows for smooth switching between 33 1/3 and 78 RPM speeds, which were the most common recording speeds before microgroove recording became the standard in the mid 1950's. All manual machining here, no CNC! Made in Jamica Queens NYC. . . . #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylmastering #vinylcutting #vinylcutter #recordlathe #masteringengineer #fairchild #fairchild lathe #mastering #masteringstudio #audioengineer #audioengineering #musicstudio #musicengineer #musicproduction #studiogear #studioequipment #studiolife #analog #audiophile #audioporn #proaudio

"Patience, kindness, and balance. One of the best things about this business is there is always something new to learn to keep things interesting. Hard work and discipline can lead to exciting new discoveries. Also, we are now in a world where there is over saturation everywhere you look. Establish limits with your workflow and take your time." - Adrian Morgan Check out the Artists Page, link in our bio⬆️ #AudezeArtists @timelessmastering
