Yesterday we opened 'Rosa Barba. Drawing Vocabularies', an exhibition that unfolds as a three-dimensional film and, at the same time, as a musical score – a space where cinema allows time and space to vibrate, collapse, overlap and expand.
Today, at 15:30, join a guided tour with the artist and the exhibition’s curator, Benjamin Weil. Later, at 17:30, under the CAM canopy, they will present the catalogue 'Impermanence in Fields' in conversation with Ana Teixeira Pinto.
Join us in celebrating International Museum Day! From 16 to 18 May, all exhibitions and activities are free.

With Frame Time Open–set within a delicate special exhibition design conceived by the artist–MAXXI’s spaces transform into an architectural notation of rhythmic interconnections through film, language, sound, and light. Rosa Barba’s research across cinema, literature and science; and exploration of time as both a physical and conceptual material underline the very title of the exhibition Frame Time Open which offers a comprehensive overview of Barba’s continuously evolving artistic methodology and reaffirms her position as a pioneering figure in contemporary visual art.
The exhibition celebrates her distinctive approach to time, «considered as an accumulation of events rather than a linear progression - and to cinema as a spatial and temporal dimension,» in her own words.

Myth and Mercury (2025) is a 35mm film co-commissioned by MAXXI and CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian and co-produced by Fondazione In Between Art Film and Hamburger Kunsthalle. On one hand, intergalactic particles or grains meeting a community’s fireworks -the explosions’ lights–momentary glows against night sky. On the other hand, extracts from Gramsci’s life in prison, memories of a revolutionary thinker as he approaches death; alongside the inner workings of the planet, bubbling scenes, volcanic land. While the film’s pace is slow, its stories carry millions of years, myths, stellar imagery, high tech machinery, and also realities of life, especially in Sicily. Myth and Mercury’s ending segment offering a vision of scientific futures almost comes at a sudden. Ultra-high energy neutrino detected in the Mediterranean, it has been declared. Records have been broken. Pulverized, even. Camera: Ruben Woodin Dechamps, Rosa Barba
Assisted by Igor Panek
Editing with Hendrik John
Sound: Pablo Diserens with Andi Toma and Jan St Werner.
Guitars: Tashi Dorji, David Grubbs
Production: Franck Bordese Suin Kwon, Local research: Agata Polizzi, Giulia Monroy
