Time Based Editions

Time Based Editions is a series of books binding print to time, merging sound with paper. Each book is a unique work by a different artist / group. An audio track combines narration, soundscape, and instructions that guide you over a given time through a book. Time Based is directed by artists David Bergé (@__d_b_ ) and Ant Hampton (@aaaaajjjjjhhhhh ). It currently has 3 titles in catalogue. Time Based Editions are also presented as events for audiences; collective and synchronized engagements with the book in theaters, museums, and site specific locations. A young female voice asks us to create in our minds the image of “an audience”, sitting on chairs in a field at sunset, looking over at a huge warehouse surrounded by fences and cameras. This voice then guides us through a book that we each hold. The pages contain what seem to be photographs from January 2026 showing this same audience being guided, by a young female worker who approaches them in the field, into and through the high-tech fulfillment centre where she works. In this oppressive and automated space of predictive, machine vision, an outage occurs. Systems go down; cheers go up; hallucinations unfurl in a last-gasp of imagination and sabotage. The events in the book will be a mix of documentary and dream, deliberately confusing / connecting / conflating different uses of the warehouse building to disect contemporary manifestations of the ‘accumulation’ (for profit) pathology, be that via knowledge/data, material goods, or detained people.

Except for Uscita, no-one we see there exists. No light was used. Just statistics, and a shit-ton of thermodynamic power. The kind of Amazon-warehouse environment these people are trashing also, increasingly, does away with light. Robots don’t like it. Automated facilities are called ‘fully lights out’. To discontinue, in tech jargon, is to ’sunset’. Who sets the sun? Who’s being sunsetted? In this hallucinatory mix of documentary and dream, a power outage emerges as an emancipatory event, paradoxically casting light on inequalities, pathologies and possible ways forward, including sabotage.
