Except for Uscita, no-one we see there exists. No light was used. Just statistics, and a shit-ton of thermodynamic power. The kind of Amazon-warehouse environment these people are trashing also, increasingly, does away with light. Robots don’t like it. Automated facilities are called ‘fully lights out’. To discontinue, in tech jargon, is to ’sunset’. Who sets the sun? Who’s being sunsetted? In this hallucinatory mix of documentary and dream, a power outage emerges as an emancipatory event, paradoxically casting light on inequalities, pathologies and possible ways forward, including sabotage.

Compleet van de Kaart - Prijs MAP-MERCATOR @ WARP Wat gebeurt er met onze omgeving als de zeespiegel blijft stijgen? Simulaties tonen een toekomst waarin Sint-Niklaas een eiland wordt. Vier kunstenaars verbeelden deze nieuwe geografie en laten ons zien hoe water het leven en de ruimte kan bepalen. Emanuele Dainotti onderzoekt hoe Artificiële Intelligentie voorspellingen inzet voor macht en controle. Hij gebruikt de technologie uiteraard zelf, kritisch en bewust. Op basis daarvan realiseerde hij een film over een toekomst waarin grote delen van de wereld, waaronder Sint-Niklaas, onder water komen te staan. Een verrassend toekomstbeeld, gebaseerd op zowel feitelijke als fictieve voorspellingen. Winnie Claessens toont sculpturale landschappen die doen denken aan het oppervlak van Mars. Tussen deze mini-landschappen zweven handgemaakte satellieten, schetsmatig gevormd met een 3D-pen. Ze onderzoekt het spanningsveld tussen wat we zien en wat we geloven.  Angelo Vermeulen werkte samen met Indra Wouters voor een installatie over water in zijn meest elementaire vorm. Ze onderzoeken hoe waterstof de kern van ons leven bepaalt: van het heelal tot de overstromingen in Saeftinghe. Hun werk laat zien hoe grenzen voortdurend veranderen.  Gabriella Ciancimino vertrekt vanuit het werk van Al-Idrissi, de 12e-eeuwse cartograaf die toen al steden uit het huidige België in zijn kaarten opnam. In Gabriella’s muurtekeningen en -schilderingen combineert ze fragmenten van zijn wereldkaart met mediterrane planten en zeewieren, en verbeeldt zo een waarin water en planten het leven bepalen. De tentoonstelling bij WARP loopt tot en met 23 november en is te bezoeken op donderdag (10u-17u) en zondag (14u-17u), of op afspraak. Silence, Emanuele Dainotti, 2024, Belgium (12/12) of The One Minutes Series ‘When Art Isn’t Life’ curated by The Critics “It was at that point that the algorithm kicked in, and we could no longer generate...anything.” The Critics, a collective of young Nigerian filmmakers, have curated a series of twelve One Minute films by artists from Belgium, Iceland, Nigeria and the United States that challenge the boundaries between art and life. Their series explores the question “Art is life. What happens when it isn’t?” The artists in this series answer this question and put their own spin on it. wwwhispers | VR 3DoF installation @roelheremans and Emanuele Dainotti During a two-month research residency in Wuhan (CN), Belgian/Italian artists Heremans & Dainotti immersed themselves in the realms of contemporary Chinese sci-fi, literature, history, and politics. Within this exploration, they reencountered a childhood game, called Telephone Game or Chinese Whispers, in which a line of children conveys a message, resulting in a playfully non-competitive and intimate miscommunication. While playing this particular game, it creates an enclosed sonic space between the participants, bringing together notions of privacy, intimacy, resistance and trust. In contemporary Chinese society, the younger generations embrace an act of whispering, navigating between authentic identities and the creation of personas and avatars. Whispering becomes an act of resistance and, simultaneously, the creation of “other” and virtual spaces. This transformation into a symbolic form of communication exists at the intersection of language and silence.
