Build Week - CAT bridge final update… for now… Floor deck mostly done ✅ Scissor trusses frames raised with rafter supports attached ✅ Rafters lapped ready to bolt on site ✅ Rails, oak wedges and ‘cogs’ cut. The tricky Queen Truss head and base connections were in the process of scribing and installation when I left site yesterday… I hope these came together well! 🤞and look forward to the team reconvening to work on the handrails, roofing and other elements. Congratulations to Nina for the original design concept and all the M.Arch and MSc Green Building students involved in its design and construction, it’s a fantastic achievement! And huge thanks to everyone who supported transforming the idea into reality, including: @centreforalternativetechnology Pat Borer, Gwyn Stacey, Dieter Brandstander, Rob Goodsell @momentumstructuralengineers @forgeways @jjennyhall @brodnax -carpentry @woodsmanjules #greenbuilding #sustainableconstruction #timberframe #localtimber .uk/courses-and-training/graduate-school/

It’s starting to take shape!.. we’ll keep you posted on progress… Graduate School - Centre for Alternative #greenbuilding #sustainableconstruction #timberframe #Woodmizer

A world first* @centreforalternativetechnology ?! Graduate School of the Environment Monolithic self-supporting #hempcrete #hemplime arch. Designed by Pat Borer, taking forward David Lea’s vision. Materials supplied by #tymawr Form work by Dieter Brandstander. Construction tutors Pat Borer and Gwyn Stacey. And labouring, learning and laughter by CAT’s wonderful students. Fantastic team effort! 🤩 *the concept’s first trial build was undertaken by University of Cardiff architecture students a few years back under David Lea’s supervision, so CAT’s arch is the first subsequent development of the idea that we’re aware of- please let us know about any other trial builds or experiments.

OK, admittedly a LOT of my job is desk-based… …but, just occasionally, I have the great honour of saying THIS is my job with @centreforalternativetechnology too!! Outdoors in woodlands, enjoying rain and sun, bringing expert practitioners together with our Masters students to demonstrate, discuss, explore #greenbuilding #sustainableconstruction working hands-on with #localtimber #Woodmizer

Spatuloon Hopefully good for frying morning egg and tomatoes 😁 Carve in coppiced sycamore from our garden, so fresh the bark peeled clean off, so I left a little bit of the raw edged wood as the top surface of the handle. #spooncarving #greenwoodcarving

I will treasure this knife; through good memories of its making, the physical object itself, and the potential it now embodies sat comfortably in the palm of my hand. Very satisfying to have started Sunday morning with a billet of ash, a short length of bearing steel and a sheet of birch bark, and through some kind of alchemy, to have created this super Sloyd before sunset. Huge gratitude @nic_westermann and @adrianrlloyd for leading such a great course, welcoming us into your workshop and sharing your deep knowledge with such openness and encouragement. Wonderful also to spend the day with Neil @forgeways my brother @russcoleridge cousin @tedcoleridge and a bunch of other lovely people. Ps apologies for the cheesy music on the video - which was put together by my phone app. I have no idea how to change the images or music, but it’s a nice record of the process 😁
