In our short film #PRETENDthefilm, we needed a long, narrow hallway with a door at the end. Sounds simple, right? Not so much. When scouting for the perfect location failed, we turned to practical effects and built a miniature hallway set instead. Glimpse behind the scenes on how a model maker saved the day, constructing a detailed miniature hallway that we shot with a probe lens, all inside a living room. This is indie filmmaking at its best: creative problem-solving, low-budget solutions, and movie magic that keeps the audience immersed without even realizing it. Step behind the scenes of #PRETENDthefilm as we reveal how the team brought the film’s monster to life through DIY effects, creative problem-solving, and true collaboration. To keep production moving, First Assistant Director Matthew Hayes literally stepped into the monster suit, balancing his crew role while playing the creature. Dropping a pie seems simple, but it becomes much more complicated when filming it. In this behind the scenes look at PRETEND, we reveal the unexpected challenges of filming the pie drop sequence. From sourcing custom breakaway pie dishes to nailing the perfect take, every detail had to come together just right. With hand-painted props, homemade pies, and high-stakes coordination, this scene pushed our indie filmmaking team to the limit.
