~ A few words about who inspired me to build the Röntgen instrument.
First of all, Rob Hordijk.
Röntgen is inspired by the concepts of the Blippoo Box and the Rungler. Two oscillators feed data crosswise into two shift registers, which in return modulate the oscillators. This leads us into wonderfully chaotic realms.
As a tribute to the late, great Rob Hordijk, I named the sequencer Robler.
Serge Tcherepnin also plays an important role.
His numerous circuits are both inspiring and instructive. I studied many of his circuits to learn how things are done. The envelope and wavefolder of the Röntgen have their origins there. Reduced and adapted to my needs, they provide me with the organic behavior I was looking for.
Conrad Schnitzler inspires me on many levels.
His philosophy that every sound is free of hierarchy, and therefore also its placement in the soundscape, has significantly influenced the design of the Röntgen.
I wanted to give the user different options for placing sounds.
That's why the wavefolder controls also function as volume controls.
That's why there's an insert. It allows you to place sounds in the delay with a foot pedal.
That's why there are buttons for manually switching the shift register and triggering the envelope.
Mika Vainio's work has inspired and accompanied me since the early 1990s, when my trusted record dealer handed me a record and said, “You have to have this.”
It was Mika's debut: Ø – Röntgen / Sähkö 001.
His raw electronic sound grabbed me immediately.
I wanted that raw sound for my device too. That's why I decided to use wavefolders instead of filters and to implement the delay with the PT2399 chip, which reveals wonderful noise realms when you push it beyond its limits.
And now it's also clear where Röntgen got its name.

Röntgen & Cosmos
What’s going on here?
I create a loop with the Cosmos in granular mode.
The Cosmos is connected to the Röntgen insert before the delay.
I then process the signal from the Cosmos with the delay. I modulate the delay time with the two oscillators of the Röntgen. This allows me to create interesting pitch shifting effects. The Golden Reverberator provides a little spring reverb at the end of the chain. #röntgensynth
Röntgen Bleeps & Bloops are now available on Soundcloud. All sounds are 100% Röntgen. No overdubs, no post-production. Three tracks have been given a little reverb, but that’s it.
You can find the Bleeps & Bloops via the LinkTree in the bio.
This is Röntgen
An analog instrument for improvisation and sonic exploration.
It consists of three parts: two oscillators with wave shapers, two random shift registers/sequencers, and a stereo delay.
The instrument is designed so that it can be played without patching. The banana jacks serve to expand the instrument’s capabilities and enable communication with other instruments.
There is an insert point between the oscillators and the delay for connecting a volume pedal, external effects, or both.
Röntgen is made to order.
