As a Jewish-owned and Jewish-inspired pop-up (check the name), weâve been horrified by whatâs happening in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and around the world.
This should go without saying, but multiple things can be true at once:
⢠Hamas committed horrific acts on October 7th
⢠Antisemitism is real and rising
⢠Islamophobia is real and rising
⢠Civilians, whether Palestinian or Israeli, or Muslims, Arabs, Jews and more living around the world, deserve dignity, safety, and humanity
⢠And unless we are willing to ignore what we are seeing with our own eyes and hearing with our own ears, the Israeli government is inflicting, or supporting, catastrophic and mass violence on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank in a deliberate attempt to destroy, in part or in whole, their society, which is also known as genocide
We know posts like this upset some people. We also know some folks have had opinions about our collaboration with our Palestinian friend
@coffeepluscakeny and the fundraising work weâve done together.
But our goal has never been to inflame things further. Itâs been to acknowledge complexity, reject dehumanization, and tryâin our own small wayâto support people who need help.
Thatâs why weâve raised money for organizations working to feed and care for civilians, including groups like World Central Kitchen and the Palestine Childrenâs Relief Fund.
Weâll continue doing that this summer during our block parties onđ
@31staveopenstreet , called the Community Cookouts.
Certain menu items will remain free, but will include suggested donations, with 100% of proceeds going to a designated organization that weâll announce ahead of each event.
Through some dark magic and community support, those donations will also be matched 1:1.
Weâre not naive enough to think ribs and chicken and block parties will solve a conflict this massive, painful, and historic.
But ignoring suffering isnât an option either.
Our block parties have always been about three things:
Food. Community. Cause.
And weâre grateful that so many people in our community understand and support the work weâre trying to do alongside
@coffeepluscakeny and others.
