Artist Spotlight: Ryan Mitchell’s @tiermir work explores the redacted and fragmented past of
his military service. The work shows how the preliminary expectations of his service within the Marine Corps significantly contrasted with the reality of serving. The images are made up of small-scale 4x6 photographs that serve two purposes. Primarily, it creates a sense of preciousness and materiality within him that reminds him that he did serve honorably. Second, the labor used in making these works serves, as a therapeutic way, to address and critique the hidden desires he wanted to experience, such as protecting one’s country through combat. He uses objects or photographs to create a sense of acceptance of those themes.
His current body of work, “Thank You, For Your Service?” explores his time serving in the U.S. military. He works with photographs taken on deployments throughout his four years in the service, utilizing collage techniques to express the fragmentation of self that resulted from his
experiences and memories. These recollections are a view into goals never achieved, training for a war that he never saw, the transitional phase of being thrown back into civilian life and the haunting regret and self-doubt while seeking new potential and purpose.
