Four years of working with Danish earth pigments culminated last Thursday with the launch of @pigmenta_works — a company established with one goal: to reestablish the production, craft, and application of natural Danish pigments. For more than 60 years, the production and use of earth pigments have been absent from Denmark, a pattern that repeats itself across much of Europe. With this absence, colors have gradually become detached from nature and are now often understood more as codes than as physical matter. With Pigmenta Works, I hope to establish a new tradition of using natural pigments in modern industry and design — a tradition that is detached from my own practice as a designer, and which can live on independently and, hopefully, inspire others to once again turn to nature for color. Stop by @officinet at Bredgade 66, Copenhagen for a glimpse into the world of ochre. And head over to @pigmenta_works for more color and pigment. Thank you to everyone who has helped out on this journey.

A few more images from last Friday @danish_design_award Jurys Word: (written by @paulagerbase ) This Summer on a beautifully warm day I had the pleasure of getting on my bike and cycling over to meet with Thomas, who introduced me to the wonderful universe of Lovskal Ochre. Ochre is an earth sediment with a high concentration of iron. It is a lightfast pigment, and is an unwanted residue in the process of purifying water for our use. In the last few years LØVSKAL OCHRE has extracted ochre from Løvskal Jutland, where an old ochre mill has sat still for 60 years. The project was born from a conviction that this natural pigment rooted in Danish soils should be celebrated and honoured for its properties, but also, importantly, for its roots to Denmarks cultural heritage. In many ways, the project feels like the point of contact between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design and industry. It looks at design from a point of process, turning raw material into object, and positioning it as a vital foundation for what comes next. It proposes raw material as an equal voice to design itself. The project highlights how intelligent design can be a true catalyst for positive change, embracing a heritage, addressing present environmental challenges, and imagining a future where past and present come together to re-think industries which have historically been at the service of design, as real and equal partners of designers and makers in the objects of the future.
