A new exhibition by photographer @theomcinnes and director @thomasralphy documents the lives of men who lived on the Bibby Stockholm barge. Running between March 17 and April 4 at @photofusionuk in London, Bibby Boys was made over the course of a year, with the pair meeting residents who had fled from war, persecution and other forms of displacement. They were allowed to leave the barge during the day, and McInnes and Ralph met and photographed them around the area – in cafés, on beaches and outside of their floating cabins. Residents on the barge reported dire conditions, with cramped cabins where they slept on narrow bunk beds, rotting food, bedbugs and flooding, while traces of potentially deadly bacteria legionella was found in the water supply. With the choice being to board the barge or be made homeless, critics often described the Bibby Stockholm as a “floating prison”. After the current Labour government was elected, it chose not to renew the contract, which expired in January 2025, and the barge was returned to its owner Bibby Marine. Working in close partnership with the residents they photographed, McInnes and Ralph aimed to shed lights on their stories, and explore the depths of their experiences. Come and see Bibby Boys at Photofusion in Brixton. We’ve been so overwhelmed by the response to the show, and by the distance people have travelled to see it. Thank you to everyone who’s come by. We’ll be there on Saturday morning before heading to the Together Alliance march against the far right, standing with Stand Up To Racism, Choose Love and many of the people in the work. Art reminds us of our shared humanity. We are so proud to be supporting the upcoming photo exhibition ‘Bibby Boys’ at @photofusionuk this March. We believe in the power of storytelling to shift hearts and spark action and this beautiful collection of photographs, ‘Bibby Boys’ does exactly that. @theomcinnes and @thomasralphy spent over a year documenting the experiences of the men aboard the Bibby Stockholm barge and the community that rallied around them. Through deeply human portraits, the exhibition celebrates the beauty and power of solidarity in action. We’re incredibly excited to stand behind this project, and we can’t wait for you to see it. Davide (right), from Colombia, was a teenager when he arrived on the Bibby Stockholm. Pictured here with his boyfriend Reece at a summer BBQ in Portland. That day, we gathered to thank the Bibby Stockholm residents who had spent the week volunteering, digging out a pond in a local back garden. Meanwhile, just a few miles down the road on Weymouth seafront (and in towns across the country) anti-immigration protests were violently unfolding. Yet again we’ve been saddened to see protests flare-up outside hotels housing vulnerable people seeking asylum. It made us think back to this memorable day, almost exactly a year ago.
