IRAN. Normally it would be another country which is currently in the news. You read it and turn to the next page… but unfortunately this time its the country where my parents are from, where most of my family lives and where i have been producing the last 20 years. It is quite strange, i am born in Germany and have lived in over 10 countries since, in Iran i have not stayed longer than 4 weeks in a row. Back in the days due to vacations to visit my family and the last years due to my work. I can’t even read nor write farsi but still i have always felt a strong connection to this god damn country which is unreal! Trust me i have dealt with problems producing there since day one, go to India they said but that would have been to easy and easy can be done by anyone, like my father always says! The older i get, the more i understand what it means when they talk about roots, about your vatan. The last months people have said you are pro this you are pro that, the only thing i am pro is Iran and its people! Not more not less! It breaks my heart to see a country and its people to suffer like this, i am speechless about the destruction and the price this country and especially its people have to pay! I am amazed and astonished by its unbelievable strong people and i hope and pray whatever happens tonight that it won’t be the ordinary people again who will suffer! I know that i am delusional but what else than hope do we have left. You people stay strong and safe! I wish i could do more but i know God has a eye on us! 📸 @thomasrabsch

On stage, Henry Rollins struck me as someone who would headbutt people around for the slightest thing. That’s why I went into the shoot with the utmost respect. But as is so often the case, his public image had little in common with the private persona. He was very friendly nice and kind. The completely opposite to his punker image as the frontman from Black Flag or Rollins Band or as the famous spoken word performer that he was. I had my Kodak Brownie with me again and overexposed the shot to get that painterly effect from the second picture. With most shoots, I don’t remember anything afterwards except the pictures. With Gavin, it’s different. Some stories are burned into my memory as if they had just happened. He wanted me to be his wedding photographer. On the day of his wedding to Gwen Stefani, I was to accompany him and his mates as they got ready. I quickly felt like part of the gang. Since I had never photographed a wedding before and had great respect for the occasion, I asked him how close I could get in the church. Close, he said. Really? Yeah, it’s rock ‚n‘ roll, baby! When it was time for dinner later, I already felt like a guest and no longer like a hired photographer. My most embarrassing mistake ever. I stood in front of the man with the guest list and asked him where I would be sitting. He looked in his book and couldn’t find me. How can that be, I asked him. He looked again and still couldn’t find me. Then he called Gavin and asked him why I wasn’t on the list. Gavin looked at me and said, „Oh Thomas, I thought you were taking photos.“ At that moment, I felt myself blushing. My God, I had been booked as a photographer and not invited as a best mate. We had only met twice before the wedding. How could I, idiot, have got it so wrong? Thomas? Huh? Mentally, I found myself on the planet Shame. Thomas? We’ve found a seat for you. So easy, so naturally nice. He sat me in the middle of his friends from the London art, film and fashion scene. One minute I was mortified, and the next I felt like I was photographing my best friends again. I quickly finished my meal and got started. Around 3 a.m., Gavin came up to me to tell me that the world press needed 1-2 pictures of the wedding in a few hours. I sat down at the computer and searched for the pictures. When I had finished editing and was proudly looking at the pictures, I heard a noise behind me. It was Gwen and Gavin, who had been looking over my shoulder for a while. Both had tears in their eyes. The wedding had such a pleasant atmosphere. It was great to have been there as their wedding photographer on assignment and to have felt like a friend. Thank you for that, Gavin, and happy Gavin day! Let yourself be celebrated my friend.

Touring can feel like traveling within the eye of a storm, filled with constant chaos. If you’re not careful, you’ll be swept up and tossed aside by it. Despite its beauty and temptation to touch, sometimes it’s best to silently watch. @thomasrabsch captured these moments before a rainstorm, hours before the show. I’m standing in front of a German potted bush on the first one, but it appears to me like an ocean of stars. Do you see what I’m seeing, or it just my mind playing tricks on me?
