After 21 years, I finally got to meet my ông nội and bà nội (paternal grandpa and grandma). Before this visit, I had never met my paternal grandparents or my paternal family side. For 21 years, I didn’t get to share the same room with them, didn’t get my cheeks randomly pinched from them, didn’t get to celebrate my life with them. I’m blessed to say that I’ve got to spend the past month with this amazing family… though a month is nearly not long enough. I don’t remember my maternal grandmother, she passed when I was a baby. I lost my maternal grandfather to cancer when I was 12, missing his last moments… thinking he’d still be there after my afternoon basketball game. I was terrified of the idea of not making it in time for my grandparents in Vietnam. I would have never forgiven myself if I never got to hug my ông nội and bà nội. But I’m happy to say that this looming pain is no longer with me. I got to hug them. Now the next challenge will be coping with the pain of leaving them. I’m grateful that my first trip beyond the USA was to my motherland - the land of mopeds and street food, sandals and tiger balm, a glass of uncle’s cà phê sữa đá - Saigon, Vietnam. But now, it’s time to make my way back. It won’t be easy leaving this place. But don’t get me wrong, I miss you goofies who make America my home. Be back soon. P.S. It’s my grandfather’s birthday today. Happy birthday ông nội <3
