@thislakshmi wants to see more bodies represented in art.
India sits down with Laxmi Hussain for EP 05 of PLAY DATES - artist, mother, and creative. Her work draws on women’s bodies in all phases of being, always in the colour blue.
Watch as Laxmi traces her journey as an artist so far, the influence her mother has on her work, and more about her artistic philosophies.

Last week I introduced you to Laxmi Hussain– this week, I want to go a little deeper about her work.
Laxmi's art blends elegance and precision, drawing inspiration from the human form, motherhood, and nature's ever-changing beauty. Her intricately composed works transcend traditional boundaries, inviting viewers to engage with her art through deliberately incomplete elements.
Blue, an ever-present hue in Laxmi's palette, carries a deeply personal resonance. It stands as a tribute to her mother and mirrors her poignant journey of self-discovery and creative exploration.
Laxmi has left her artistic footprint amongst some of the most prestigious brands and organisations, such as Tate, Soho House, Henry Moore Studios, Vogue -Philippines, US & UK, Penguin Books and H&M Home. Her creative expertise ripples into the worlds of fashion, design, and literary expression.
I cannot wait to host Laxmi for our very first Elastic Orbits conversation on the 21st of May! Join us (and don't forget to register, the link is in the bio)
Being a mother is always a juggling act and as a full-time working one with them in and out of the studio I sometimes wish I had way more hands. However there would be no art without them, they are my biggest love. Here’s some snaps of them in my studios over the years 💙
Happy Mother’s Day to all 💙
Held tight to home, growing in my landscape.
I often think of the ways the rolling shapes my body makes feel like a landscape and how like a landscape we are held, nourished, given refuge, watered. I remember how the sight of my mother would always make my eyes eager, staring brightly and with love like seeing a landscape of wonder. Is that what my body is to my own?

PLAY DATES EP 06, @thislakshmi and her journey with the line 🌀
PLAY founder @india_bailey sits down with artist, mother and creative Laxmi Hussain to discuss her artistry so far, the colour blue, and how her mother influences her art to the day.
The London-based artist traces women’s bodies in transition. In this conversation, Laxmi shares how movement plays a role in the deconstruction of the line, and what it means to stop performing and start being.
This is our art in motion.
