Photography on location in Copenhagen and surroundings for the Volvo ES90. We always enjoy shooting in Denmark for the architecture and the open roads within a relatively small area. We photographed everything on location with a stand-in car, then replaced it with the final CGI version in post production. We also added some behind the scenes pictures here.

Volvo has a dedicated department that turns standard cars into special vehicles, including armoured cars and vehicles for airport, medical, and fire services. They needed a new set of images to promote these vehicles, so we photographed them on locations close to home here in Gothenburg. Everything is pure photography, combined with hands-on retouching and grading to give the images their distinct look.

Following up on our Volvo EX60 posts, here is another look at the full CGI images.
The concept and creative direction were led by AKQA, the CGI was created by Vintr, and we handled the retouching and color grading at ThisisMade, all working closely together with the client.
Once the CGI was in place, and the look&feel of this series was more or less determined, our focus shifted to the car itself. In close collaboration with the Volvo designers, we worked to present the new features, materials, and details of the EX60 as clearly and precisely as possible. Through careful retouching, grading, and constant back and forth with the designers of the car, shaping the final images to let the car appear at its most beautiful, and true to its design.

Here is another post about our location shoot of the Volvo EX60, and a small continuation of the story from the first one. We went to Lofoten in northern Norway to photograph backplates in that warm, low sunset light, even though it was technically the middle of the night. Those images later became the base for the CGI work.
Beyond the light and the location, an important part of this project was the people on site. Having the photographer, art director, and client together behind the camera meant ideas moved fast and decisions were made in the moment.
It’s a way of working that’s hard to plan for. Small conversations between shots, quick adjustments, different perspectives meeting on location. All of that feeds directly into the images, and it’s a big reason why the results resonate with so many people.

Congratulations to Volvo Cars!
This project was a collaboration between AKQA, who led the concept and creative direction, Vintr, who created the CGI, and us at This is Made, responsible for retouching and grading.
The images of the Volvo EX60 were created long before the car was revealed, in parallel with our shoot in Lofoten (see previous post). While the locations were being captured on site, a second set of images was taking shape entirely in CGI.
Once the CGI was ready, our focus at This is Made was on shaping the final look of the images. Through colour grading and retouching, we worked on light, tone, and atmosphere, aiming to give the visuals a sense of warmth and emotion.
The goal was never to make the images look technical or perfect, but to let them communicate emotion. Creating imagery that feels inviting, natural, and alive, and that supports the first impression of the Volvo EX60 as it enters the world.

While most people were patiently waiting for the reveal of the all new Volvo EX60, we were already busy creating images for its launch.
We headed north to Lofoten in Norway to shoot backplates that would later be combined with a fully CGI rendered car. The empty landscapes and open horizons gave us the perfect stage to work with.
The brief called for warm light and the sun sitting low on the horizon. Sounds simple, until you realise we were shooting above the Arctic Circle in the middle of summer. That meant shooting in the middle of the night, when the sun finally dipped low over the horizon. Working through the night while the sun barely set, to the point where we completely lost track of time.
