After a long days work.
I’ve had a lot of fun working with my hands lately. Digging septic tanks. Pouring concrete. Plastering. Tractoring. Planting.
I’m convinced that an honest days work is the very best thing for my emotional and mental health. This painting is that very tired feeling at the end of the day.
I’ve been painting on wood instead of canvas. The surface feels different — the grain shows through, and it changes the way the paint sits. It makes the work a little rougher, a little more grounded.

I paint faces on a large scale so you can’t avoid them — so you have to look into their eyes and feel what they’re carrying. At 48x60 inches, the canvas becomes almost confrontational, like the emotion is staring back at you. Oil on canvas.

I’ve been thinking a lot about intimacy and relationships — how you can be right next to someone and still live in your own world. This painting is part of my Closer series. Oil on canvas, 36x36.

I grew up on a ranch in the mountains of northern Utah. My school was all farmers and cowboys. I never felt comfortable in western culture and would ride my horse wearing jncos and nikes. So I find it a bit ironic that I’m returning to my cowboy roots after all these years. Guess I’ll find out more about it in therapy.
